SOHO SMTP

Description

By default WordPress sends email straight from the web server. Those emails are not authenticated,
so contact form messages often land in spam, get rejected by Gmail, or silently disappear.

SOHO SMTP makes every email from your site โ€” contact forms, comment notices, new users, password
resets, shop orders โ€” leave through an authenticated connection you choose. Emails sent by other
plugins take the same route automatically.

Choose how emails are sent

  • SMTP server โ€” pick your mail service and the server, port and encryption are filled in:
Gmail, Outlook.com, Naver, Daum, Yahoo! JAPAN Mail, XServer, Sakura Internet, Synology NAS, or any other SMTP server.
The services of the admin’s own country are listed first.
  • Email API service โ€” SendGrid, Mailgun, Amazon SES, Postmark, Brevo, SMTP2GO. Only HTTPS is needed,
so this works even when your host blocks mail ports.
  • Google account / Microsoft account โ€” send through Gmail or Microsoft 365 / Outlook.com with OAuth,
using your own app. Step-by-step instructions are on the screen, including the steps that usually trip people up
(publishing the Google app so the connection does not expire every 7 days).

Never lose an email

  • Backup server โ€” when the main connection fails, the same email is sent right away through a second SMTP server.
  • Automatic retries โ€” failed emails are tried again after 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 hours and 6 hours.
Attachments are kept safely until the email is delivered.
  • Background sending (optional) โ€” forms respond instantly instead of waiting for the mail server.
  • Failure alerts โ€” an email to you when something cannot be delivered (sent through the backup server when
the main connection is the problem; at most one per hour).
  • Weekly report โ€” delivered, failed and the most common reasons.
  • Site Health โ€” problems show up in Tools > Site Health.

Errors explained in plain language

  • Test email โ€” send a real email with the current settings, even before turning SOHO SMTP on.
  • When it fails you get the cause and what to do โ€” for example “Signing in failed: Gmail needs an app password” โ€”
instead of a raw error code. The conversation with the server is shown with passwords and message content removed.

Sending log

  • When, to whom, which subject, through which route, and the result โ€” with the full server conversation for failures.
  • Message bodies and attachments are never stored. Entries are deleted after 7, 30 or 90 days.

Domain authentication check

When the test succeeds but a bounce arrives later, the cause is almost always the sender domain.
One click checks:

  • SPF โ€” is there a record, does it include your mail server or service (following include, a, mx and redirect),
are there duplicate records or a dangerous “+all”
  • DKIM โ€” is a public key published (common selectors are tried automatically; you can enter yours)
  • DMARC โ€” is there a policy
  • Sending a @gmail.com (or other mail service) address through another server โ€” a combination that is always rejected

When something is missing, SOHO SMTP writes the DNS value for you, ready to copy.

Safe and simple

  • Passwords, API keys and account tokens are stored encrypted. The key is derived from your site’s security keys in
wp-config.php, not stored in the database, so a database copy alone cannot reveal them. Nothing to set up.
  • Fixed sender โ€” stops other plugins from putting a visitor’s address as the sender (which receivers reject),
    while keeping their reply-to address.
  • Japanese encoding (optional) โ€” plain-text emails in ISO-2022-JP for older Japanese mobile phones.
  • Settings left by another mail plugin can be imported in one click.
  • Warns when another plugin is also changing how email is sent.
  • Ready for translation. The interface is written in English; Korean and Japanese translations are provided through translate.wordpress.org.

SOHO SMTP has a sister plugin for search engines. SOHO SEO is a WordPress SEO plugin where technical SEO runs by itself: structured data, an XML sitemap, a Google News sitemap, noindex management, 301/302 redirects and tag cleanup are free and work right after installation, with no account. Optional SOHO Intelligence tools โ€” a site error check, a post check scored out of 100, and internal / external link management โ€” use credits.

SOHO SMTP itself does not connect to SOHO SEO or to any other service of the author. The links above only open web pages.

External services

SOHO SMTP does not send any data to the plugin author. It connects to outside services only to deliver your email,
and only to the service you choose in the settings:

  • Your SMTP server (the server you enter, e.g. your mail provider or your own NAS) โ€” the email is sent to it when
your site sends an email or you click “Send test email”.
  • SendGrid (api.sendgrid.com) โ€” only when chosen. The email (sender, recipients, subject, content, attachments)
is sent to deliver it. Terms, Privacy
  • Mailgun (api.mailgun.net / api.eu.mailgun.net) โ€” only when chosen; same data.
    Terms, Privacy
  • Amazon SES (email.REGION.amazonaws.com) โ€” only when chosen; same data.
    Terms, Privacy
  • Postmark (api.postmarkapp.com) โ€” only when chosen; same data.
    Terms, Privacy
  • Brevo (api.brevo.com) โ€” only when chosen; same data.
    Terms, Privacy
  • SMTP2GO (api.smtp2go.com) โ€” only when chosen; same data.
    Terms, Privacy
  • Google (accounts.google.com, oauth2.googleapis.com, gmail.googleapis.com) โ€” only when “Google account” is chosen.
Your browser signs in at Google; the site exchanges the authorization code for tokens and sends emails through the
    Gmail API. Terms, Privacy
  • Microsoft (login.microsoftonline.com, graph.microsoft.com) โ€” only when “Microsoft account” is chosen; same flow
    with Microsoft Graph. Terms, Privacy

The domain check only uses your server’s own DNS lookups (dns_get_record) to read public SPF, DKIM and DMARC records.
No outside API is called.

Privacy

SOHO SMTP does not collect data for the plugin author. On your own site it stores, in the sending log, the date, recipient address, subject, route and result of each email (not the message body or attachments), and deletes entries after 7, 30 or 90 days as you choose. Emails waiting for a retry keep their attachments in a protected folder in the uploads directory until delivery. Passwords, API keys and tokens are stored encrypted. A suggested privacy policy text is added under Settings > Privacy.

Configuration constants

Optional, for developers. A value defined in wp-config.php overrides the setting and is shown as locked:

LUXMAIL_TRANSPORT (smtp, api, google, microsoft), `LUXMAIL_API_PROVIDER` (sendgrid, mailgun, ses, postmark, brevo, smtp2go),
LUXMAIL_SMTP_HOST, `LUXMAIL_SMTP_PORT`, `LUXMAIL_SMTP_ENCRYPTION` (tls, ssl, none), `LUXMAIL_SMTP_USER`, `LUXMAIL_SMTP_PASS`,
LUXMAIL_FROM_EMAIL, `LUXMAIL_FROM_NAME`, `LUXMAIL_SENDGRID_API_KEY`, `LUXMAIL_MAILGUN_API_KEY`, `LUXMAIL_MAILGUN_DOMAIN`,
LUXMAIL_MAILGUN_REGION (us, eu), `LUXMAIL_SES_ACCESS_KEY_ID`, `LUXMAIL_SES_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY`, `LUXMAIL_SES_REGION`,
LUXMAIL_POSTMARK_TOKEN, `LUXMAIL_BREVO_API_KEY`, `LUXMAIL_SMTP2GO_API_KEY`.<h3>WP-CLI</h3>

* wp soho-smtp status
* wp soho-smtp test you@example.com [--backup]
* wp soho-smtp queue run / wp soho-smtp queue status

Developers

  • Filter luxmail_pre_dns_txt โ€” supply TXT lookup results for the domain check (internal DNS, tests).
  • Delivery happens when wp_mail() calls send() on the mailer, after every other plugin has built the message,
so the message is sent exactly as WordPress and your plugins created it.

Installation

  1. Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin: upload the zip and activate.
  2. SOHO SMTP > Settings: choose the sending method and your mail service, enter the account, and save.
  3. Open the “Test email” tab and send a test.
  4. When the test succeeds, turn on “Use SOHO SMTP” in Settings.
  5. If you send from your own domain, run the “Domain check”.

FAQ

Signing in to Gmail fails

Gmail does not accept your normal password over SMTP. Turn on 2-Step Verification in your Google Account > Security,
create an “App password” and use it as the password. Or choose “Google account” as the sending method.

The test succeeds but a bounce message arrives

The mail server accepted the email, but the receiver rejected it as an “unauthenticated sender”. Run the
“Domain check”. Addresses of mail services (@gmail.com and so on) can only be sent through that service’s servers โ€”
when sending through your own server or NAS, use an address on your own domain.

Will replies to contact form emails go to the visitor?

Yes. “Fixed sender” only changes the From address; the reply-to address set by the form is kept.

Where are passwords stored?

In the WordPress database, encrypted. The encryption key comes from the security keys in wp-config.php.
If those keys change or the site is moved to another installation, SOHO SMTP asks you to enter the password again.

Background sending is slow on my site

It uses WordPress scheduled tasks (WP-Cron), which only run when someone visits the site. On sites with very few
visitors, set up a real cron job on the server, or press “Send now” on the log screen.

Can I keep the settings in wp-config.php?

Yes (for developers and agencies). See “Configuration constants” below.

Changelog

2.1.4

  • New “More from SOHO” page, and one short line on the Overview, that introduce SOHO SEO. Static text and links only: nothing is sent anywhere, and the line is hidden when SOHO SEO is active.
  • Readme in English, Korean and Japanese.
  • Removed the “LUX plugins / Coming soon” placeholder page.

2.1.3

  • New name: SOHO SMTP.
  • Queued file attachments: only real local files of an allowed type (never .php, .exe and the like) up to 25 MB are kept for retries, stored under a neutral file name in the plugin’s own protected folder (uploads/soho-smtp). No PHP or other code files are written there. Anything else is sent right away instead of being queued.
  • Translations are no longer bundled; they are delivered through translate.wordpress.org.

2.1.2

  • Internal file rename to pass the automated plugin scan.

2.1.1

  • Review fixes: removed decorative images, added privacy information, shorter short description, plugin header cleanup.

2.1.0

  • New menu: Overview, Sending connection, Sender, Delivery & alerts, Sending log, Domain check, Tools.
  • Overview runs a site check by itself: other mail plugins are named and can be deactivated with one click,
the mail server port is tested, unreadable passwords, rejected sender addresses and stuck emails are found,
and each problem has a button that fixes it or leads to the right page.
  • The header shows what actually happened (working, delivery problem, turned off) instead of asking for a test.
  • Each page saves only its own settings.
  • Tools: import settings, log retention, system information to copy for support.

2.0.0

  • New sending methods: email API services (SendGrid, Mailgun, Amazon SES, Postmark, Brevo, SMTP2GO) and
Google / Microsoft accounts (OAuth with your own app).
  • Backup SMTP server, automatic retries, optional background sending, failure alerts, weekly report.
  • Sending log with the server conversation for failures, “Send now” for waiting emails.
  • Site Health check and information, WP-CLI commands.
  • Japanese services (Yahoo! JAPAN Mail, XServer, Sakura Internet), Outlook.com, and ISO-2022-JP option.
  • English, Korean and Japanese.
  • Import of settings left by another mail plugin; optional wp-config.php constants.
  • Domain check understands API services and account sending.

1.0.0

  • First release: SMTP with service presets, encrypted password, fixed sender, test email with explained errors,
sending log, SPF / DKIM / DMARC check.
