Description
Privacy Toolkit closes a gap WordPress leaves open by default: the IP address of every comment author is stored in full.
- New comments are anonymized immediately, before they are stored: for IPv4 the last part of the address is removed (203.0.113.42 becomes 203.0.113.0), for IPv6 everything after the first 48 bits.
- Existing comments are migrated in the background, or immediately via a button.
- A suggested privacy-policy text block, generated from which 360 plugins are actually active on this site — a starting point, not legal advice.
Free vs. Pro
The free version anonymizes comment IPs and generates the policy text.
Privacy Toolkit Pro adds:
- Configurable automatic deletion of old spam/trash comments (never affects approved comments).
- A consolidated, read-only overview of WordPress’ own data export/erasure requests, with direct links to process them.
- Settings export/import as JSON, for agencies setting up several sites identically.

Installation
- Install the plugin under Plugins Add New (search for “360 Orbit Privacy Toolkit”), or upload the ZIP under Plugins Add New Upload Plugin.
- Activate the plugin — new comment IPs are anonymized from this point on.
- On the Status tab, click “Anonymize now” to migrate existing comments right away (otherwise a daily background task handles it).
FAQ
-
This plugin does not set cookies. Whether your site needs a consent banner depends on everything else running on it (analytics, embeds, ads) — this plugin alone does not answer that question, and this is not legal advice.
-
Is the generated privacy-policy text legally binding?
-
No. It is a starting point based on what is technically active on your site, not legal advice. Always have it reviewed by a qualified professional.
-
What happens to comments that already have a raw IP address?
-
They are migrated in batches by a daily background task, or immediately if you click “Anonymize now” on the Status tab.
-
What exactly is anonymized?
-
Only the IP address stored with each comment. The browser user agent string and the other data from the comment form are stored by WordPress as usual and are not changed by this plugin. The suggested privacy-policy text says so.
-
Does the plugin send data to other servers?
-
No. The free version makes no requests to external services and sets no cookies. Apart from its own settings, it only changes the IP address column of your own comments table.
-
Can I get the original IP addresses back?
-
No. Anonymization cannot be undone, which is the point. Click “Anonymize now” only when you are sure; new comments are anonymized automatically from activation on.
-
Does it work on multisite?
-
Yes. The settings and the status apply per site, and uninstalling removes the data of every site in the network.
-
Which languages is the backend available in?
-
The backend follows the language set in WordPress. Translations are provided through translate.wordpress.org and you are welcome to contribute one for your language.
-
Liability?
-
This plugin is provided without any warranty (“as is”). The developer assumes no liability for data loss or damage arising from its use. Taking a full backup before use is strongly recommended.
