Bot118 Chatbot

Description

Unlike a generic chatbot, this plugin builds its knowledge base directly from
your own WordPress pages/posts, and is instructed to answer only from that
content. If a visitor asks something outside it, the bot says so plainly and
points them to a contact you configure, instead of guessing.

Everything runs inside your own WordPress install. The plugin calls the
Anthropic API directly from your server using an API key you provide
(bring-your-own-key). No account, license key or payment is needed, and every
feature of the plugin is available to everyone.

Separately, 118 West sells an optional “Bot118 Pro” add-on plugin (managed AI so you
need no Anthropic account, lead capture, sales mode, your own bot image, your own welcome greeting and footer) at
https://118west.com/wordpress-plug-in-shop/ . This plugin works fully without it.

The knowledge base rebuilds itself automatically after you publish or update
indexed content, and the plugin actively watches for an expired or revoked
Anthropic key so a broken key produces a clear warning in wp-admin instead of a
silently broken widget.

External services

This plugin connects to one external service. Please review its terms before use.

  • Anthropic (Claude API) – every
visitor question is sent to api.anthropic.com, along with a short excerpt of
your own site content and your Anthropic API key, to generate an answer. No
other visitor data is sent. Anthropic Privacy Policy:
    https://www.anthropic.com/privacy – Terms:
    https://www.anthropic.com/legal/commercial-terms

The plugin shows no credit link by default. In Settings you may optionally turn
on a small “Bot118 by 118 West” banner under the chat window.

Keeping content current

By default, the knowledge base rebuilds itself automatically about 30
seconds after you publish or update any indexed content, and once a day as
a safety net (this relies on WordPress’s own scheduler, which needs site
visits to fire – very low-traffic sites may see a short delay). You can turn
this off and rebuild manually instead from Settings > Bot118 Chatbot.

Notes on this version

  • Retrieval is simple keyword matching, not semantic embeddings. It works
well for direct FAQ-style questions but can miss heavily paraphrased ones.
  • The chat endpoint is public (any site visitor can use it). To limit bots and
runaway usage it requires a short-lived signed token the bundled widget fetches
when the chat is opened, checks the request’s origin, rate-limits per visitor,
caps messages per conversation, ignores repeated identical questions and
enforces a configurable daily limit. A determined attacker rotating IP
addresses can still send some requests; the daily limit bounds the cost.
  • For a multi-site/multi-club rollout, each site gets its own install and
its own settings – this version does not share a knowledge base across sites.

Installation

  1. Upload the bot118-the-ai-chatbot folder to /wp-content/plugins/, or install the
zip via Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
  2. Activate the plugin.
  3. Go to Settings > Bot118 Chatbot.
  4. Enter your Anthropic API key (from console.anthropic.com) – when creating that key,
set its expiration to “Never” so it doesn’t stop working on its own later.
    Step-by-step guide: https://118West.com/b-bot-anthropic-key/
  5. Set your organization name and a fallback contact (email or phone) for
    questions the bot can’t answer.
  6. Choose which content types to index (e.g. Pages, or a custom “FAQ” post
type if you have one). Keep this scoped to real help/policy content –
indexing your whole blog will produce noisier answers.
  7. Click “Rebuild Knowledge Base Now” for the first build.
  8. The chat bubble appears automatically on your site’s frontend once a key
is set and at least one chunk is indexed. No
    template edits needed.

FAQ

Do I need my own Anthropic API key?

Yes – the plugin calls Anthropic
directly using a key you create and pay for at console.anthropic.com.
Anthropic’s own usage is typically inexpensive for a single site’s FAQ
traffic.

What happens if my Anthropic API key expires?

The plugin checks your key’s status automatically (daily, and immediately
after any failed chat request) and will show a warning banner across
wp-admin plus send you an email if it stops working – instead of the chat
widget silently going quiet.

Do I need a license key or account?

No. The plugin is fully functional with just your own Anthropic API key, and
every feature is available to everyone.

What visitor/site data gets sent to the AI, and what doesn’t?

Only two things are sent to Anthropic to generate each answer: the specific
content chunks from your own site that matched the visitor’s question (from
whichever post types you chose to index), and the visitor’s typed message
plus the recent turns of that same conversation. Nothing else on your site
is sent – no user accounts, no unindexed content, no data from other
customers’ sites. Content you don’t select under “Content to Index” can
never be sent, because it’s never pulled into the knowledge base at all.

Anthropic’s own Commercial Terms of Service state they do not use API
customer content to train their models by default – see
https://www.anthropic.com/legal/commercial-terms for their current terms.
