AsadShah8 WebP Converter

Description

AsadShah8 WebP Converter converts JPEG and PNG images to the modern WebP format using the image library WordPress already uses (GD or Imagick). No external services are involved and no data leaves your server.

Every conversion is verified before anything is deleted. The plugin only removes the original image files after the WebP file has been created, checked, attached to the same Media Library item, and its metadata and MIME type have been confirmed. If any step fails, the attachment is restored to its original state and your original files are left in place.

Features

  • Automatic conversion of new JPEG and PNG uploads.
  • Bulk conversion of your existing Media Library, processed in small batches with a live progress bar.
  • Verified, safe conversion with automatic rollback on failure.
  • The Media Library item and its ID are preserved; thumbnails are regenerated as WebP.
  • Dashboard with library statistics: images in library, WebP images, pending, processing, converted, failed, and space saved.
  • Failed-conversion list with the error for each image, single Retry and Retry All.
  • Adjustable WebP quality (1–100).
  • Clean uninstall: all plugin settings and bookkeeping data are removed when the plugin is deleted.

Important

After a verified conversion the original JPEG/PNG files are permanently deleted. Links in posts, pages or page-builder content that point directly at the old file URLs (for example a hard-coded .jpg URL) are not rewritten. Please back up your site before converting your existing library.

Installation

  1. Upload the asadshah8-webp-converter folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory, or install the plugin through the Plugins screen in WordPress.
  2. Activate the plugin through the Plugins screen.
  3. Go to Media > WebP Converter to see your library statistics and convert existing images.
  4. Go to Media > WebP Converter Settings to choose the WebP quality and to turn automatic conversion of new uploads on or off.

FAQ

Does this plugin delete my original images?

Yes. After a conversion has been fully verified, the original JPEG/PNG file and its generated sizes are deleted to save space. If a conversion fails, nothing is deleted. Always keep a backup.

Will links to my old images break?

The Media Library item is updated automatically, so images inserted through WordPress blocks, featured images and galleries will use the WebP file. Content that contains a hard-coded URL to the old .jpg or .png file is not rewritten and may show a broken image.

The plugin says WebP is not supported on my server.

Your PHP image library (GD or Imagick) must be built with WebP support. Contact your hosting provider and ask them to enable it.

Does it work in the background?

New uploads are converted during the upload. Images that you re-queue from the Failed Conversions list are also picked up by a WP-Cron task that runs every five minutes while automatic conversion is enabled.

What happens to my data if I delete the plugin?

Your images stay as WebP in the Media Library. The plugin’s settings and per-image bookkeeping data are removed.

Does it support multisite?

Yes. Each site has its own settings, and uninstalling removes the data from every site.
