Jawnie – AI Disclosure for Chatbots & AI Images

Description

Since August 2, 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires websites to tell visitors when they are interacting with an AI system, and to label AI-generated or AI-manipulated images that could appear authentic. Fines can reach €15M or 3% of worldwide turnover.

This plugin handles the two obligations most WordPress sites actually have:

1. Chatbot disclosure (Art. 50(1))

  • Detects AI chatbots automatically — plugin-based (AI Engine, MxChat, Kognetiks) and embedded widgets (Tidio, Chatbase, Intercom, Crisp, HubSpot, Tawk.to, LiveChat, Botpress, Voiceflow)
  • Attaches a clear, accessible “You are interacting with an AI chatbot” notice directly to the chat window — at first interaction, as the Commission’s July 2026 guidance expects, not buried in your terms
  • Deep AI Engine integration: the disclosure also becomes part of the bot’s own greeting
  • Custom CSS selectors for widgets we don’t know yet
  • Fully translatable disclosure text (English, Polish, German included)

2. AI image labels (Art. 50(4))

  • Auto-detects AI-generated images on upload by reading C2PA manifests, IPTC digitalSourceType and generator metadata (DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Firefly and others)
  • One checkbox in the Media Library to flag or unflag any image manually
  • Visible badge on labeled images (corner badge or full-width bar)
  • Machine-readable markup: schema.org ImageObject JSON-LD with IPTC digitalSourceType, plus data attributes

FAQ

Does this plugin make my site compliant with the EU AI Act?

It implements the practical transparency measures for the two Article 50 duties that most commonly apply to websites: chatbot disclosure and AI image labeling. Whether you are fully compliant depends on how you use AI overall. When in doubt, consult a lawyer — this plugin is a tool, not legal advice.

My chatbot is not detected. What do I do?

Add its container’s CSS selector under Settings AI Disclosure Custom CSS selectors (one per line). Please also open a support thread and tell us which chatbot you use — we add popular ones to auto-detection.

Does it work with AI-generated text too?

The Act’s text-labeling duty (Art. 50(4)) only covers AI text published to inform the public on matters of public interest, and it does not apply where a human editor takes responsibility. Product descriptions and ordinary marketing copy are out of scope. A documented editorial-review workflow feature is on our roadmap.

Does the plugin phone home?

No. It makes no external requests, sets no cookies, and collects no data.
