OpenLab Module Builder allows you to create, organize, and display modular content on your WordPress site. The plugin provides tools for building structured modules, self-contained units of related content that are easy to navigate, share, reuse, and remix. It helps you easily create open educational resources (OER), learning modules, and more. It supports module cloning and import/export functionality, as well as integration with interactive content via H5P.
Each module is made up of:
- A Module Home page, the main point of entry for the module.
- Module pages, individual pieces of content within the module.
- A Table of Contents listing of every page in the module, displayed at the top of all module pages.
- Built-in navigation at the bottom of each page to move to the next page or return to the previous one.

- Build modules with a home page and an ordered set of internal pages, each with an automatically generated table of contents.
- Present content in a clear, self-contained sequence, with previous/next navigation.
- Embed H5P activities.
- Track learner progress and offer verification of completion via in-page popup message and email.
- Reuse and remix existing modules by cloning them within the same site or multisite network, or export/import modules across different WordPress installations.

OpenLab Module Builder was created by a team based at City Tech (New York City College of Technology, City University of New York) as part of Connect the DOTS: Digital Open Tools and Supports for Student Success in STEM, a City Tech initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP)* to support student success in applying mathematical concepts to problems in other STEM disciplines.
OpenLab Module Builder was developed in partnership with The OpenLab at City Tech, an open platform for teaching, learning, and collaboration; anyone can create an OpenLab using the free and open source software Commons In A Box OpenLab.

Blocks
This plugin provides 4 blocks.
- All Modules List This block is dynamically generated to display a list of all of the published Modules on your site. To change the order of the modules, drag and drop using the icon.
- Module TOC This Table of Contents (TOC) is dynamically generated based on the pages belonging to the module.
- Placeholder Text Placeholder text for use in the editor.
- Module Sharing This block enables others to clone the module. It will appear at the top of the Module Home automatically when you select Clone in the Module Settings. You can remove this block, if you don’t want to enable shared cloning. You can also add it to other areas of the Module.
Installation
- Upload the ‘openlab-module-builder’ folder to the ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory.
- Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
- Begin creating modules from the WordPress Dashboard.

What is a module?

A module is a collection of related information, grouped together for easy and convenient access. It has a main point of entry (the Module Home), an internal table of contents, and an expected order of presentation, making it self-contained, shareable, and remixable.
A module might be an introduction to a subject, a review of a topic for a course, a collection of related works or art, the steps of a multi-part research project, or any other set of related content.

How do I create a module?

After activating the plugin, you can create modules from the WordPress Dashboard.

Can I reuse or copy an existing module?

Yes. You can reuse or remix an existing module by cloning it to make your own copy. You can also enable “shared cloning” across a WordPress multisite network where you can allow others to clone your modules. Export/import functionality allows you to share content across different WordPress installations.

Can learners track their progress through a module?

Yes. Modules support completion tracking and completion messages, and depending on how a module is configured, learners may be able to obtain verification that they have completed it.

Can I use OpenLab Modules with any WordPress theme?

Yes. The plugin is built to work with any theme, but the style and layout of certain themes may work better for modules than others.
