What is Data Liberation?
The Data Liberation project envisions a web where your data is truly yours, not locked in closed platforms. Through five development phases, WordPress will give you powerful tools to reclaim, manage, and move your content anywhere on the web—no hosting accounts needed.

Phase 1: Migration Guides
Phase 1 of Data Liberation kicked off with what’s available at hand: clear, practical guides. Migrating your site from platforms like Wix, Figma, or even static HTML can be challenging, but the step-by-step migration guides make it much more achievable.

Phase 2: Importing and Exporting Structured Data
Phase 2 solves the largest structural data migration problems: updating links, copying media, recovering from errors, and supporting large sites. It is built for developers to extend and support any content format.

Phase 3: Liberating Data From Closed Platforms
Phase 3 covers user-facing tools for extracting media, content, and design from closed platforms. AI coding tools like Claude Code, Codex, and Grok can handle the media and content well enough to rebuild a site inspired by the source. Design is harder. Studio by WordPress.com‘s open source data liberation agent plugin pairs AI with purpose-built tooling, and it replicates a design much more closely than prompting a model on its own. It works with many platforms and has specialized tools for GoDaddy Websites & Marketing, Hostinger Website Builder, HubSpot, Shopify, Squarespace, Webflow, Weebly, and Wix.

Phase 4: Direct WordPress-to-WordPress Synchronization
Phase 4 enables keeping two WordPress sites in sync, letting you mirror your data with a few taps on your phone. Syncing your data between all your devices, backups, publishing your content, and cloning an existing WordPress site in Playground are just a few reasons to use it.

Phase 5: Content Creation Powerhouse
In Phase 5 WordPress will become your central content hub for everything from personal notes, to ebooks, to social posts—all stored locally and synced across your devices. Phase 5 is the final step in reclaiming your digital world.
