Owner and group are both root for everything, so it makes sense that I can&#8217;t update or install new plugins from the WordPress admin using my account credentials. So, I changed owner and group to my user account (which has SFTP access to everything).<\/p>\n<p>I change ownership first and I still get the message:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p> Removing the old version of the plugin\u2026 Could not remove the old plugin. Plugin update failed.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Then I change the group from root to my user account, and the plugins disappear from the WordPress dashboard. I can still see the files there because I&#8217;m SSHd in, but changing the group from root has caused them to vanish from WordPress.<\/p>\n<p><em>And,<\/em> changing owner and group <em>back<\/em> to root does not make them re-appear. <\/p>\n<p>I know I can install and update plugins and themes manually via SFTP, but it would be nice to be able to use the dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate any suggestions for this Linux permissions novice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","class_list":["post-3296393","topic","type-topic","status-closed","hentry"],"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic\/3296393","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/topic"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic\/3296393\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3296393"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
