{"id":19018114,"date":"2026-09-11T21:08:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T21:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/topic\/utf-8-diacritics-interpreted-incorrectly\/"},"modified":"2026-09-11T21:08:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T21:08:20","slug":"utf-8-diacritics-interpreted-incorrectly","status":"publish","type":"topic","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/topic\/utf-8-diacritics-interpreted-incorrectly\/","title":{"rendered":"UTF-8 Diacritics interpreted incorrectly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using Postie 1.9.80 and WordPress 7.1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My source email has characters with diacritics (Crist\u00f3bal) that get mistranslated when they finally wind up in a post (Crist\u00c3\u00b3bal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source email is encoded as UTF-8:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Content-Type: text\/plain; charset=utf-8<br \/>Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Base64 payload decodes correctly to text containing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Crist\u00f3bal Aguilar<br \/>de Le\u00f3n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UTF-8 bytes for <code>\u00f3<\/code> are correctly present as <code>C3 B3<\/code> in the decoded message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, after Postie 1.9.80 processes the email, the resulting WordPress post contains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Crist\u00c3\u00b3bal Aguilar<br \/>de Le\u00c3\u00b3n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Postie&#8217;s Test Config reports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>default_charset: utf-8<br \/>DB_CHARSET: utf8<br \/>DB_COLLATE: utf8_general_ci<br \/>WordPress encoding: UTF-8<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The email is plain text rather than HTML, and the corruption occurs in the resulting post content itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have the complete raw email available, including the MIME headers and Base64 payload, and can provide it if useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can this please be investigated?
