Reduce image file sizes, improve performance and boost your SEO using the free WPMU DEV WordPress Smush API.
I know there's been a few recent changes, but this plugin has always worked well for me and drastically reduces my image size and reduces the bloat/strain on my site. I hope they get the Yahoo issue fixed soon but nonetheless I'm willing to accept the 90% discount.
My customer just added this to their site. Upon updating the plugin today, it claims that Yahoo isn't supporting the free service anymore and that they're working on another solution. In the interim, they're offering a 90% discount for users to go to the Pro version, which is a monthly, never-ending subscription.
Not cool...in the interim a fix should free, or this plugin should be removed and sold only as a pro version.
I'm not against paid plugins - not at all. But they just need to be straightforward about it.
I used the "bulk smush.it" option for my media library, which has 177 images. Plugin stated it would take up to 8 minutes to complete. Although it took much longer than 8 minutes (took about 30ish), it did work. Only one minor hiccup - about halfway through it seemed to stop working, so I simply went back to media library, selected the "bulk smush.it" option, and ran it again. It skipped over all the media already "smushed" and finished out the process. I would have given it 5-stars if it didn't time out during process. End result is it did work and definitely helped to improve loading speed on my website. I would recommend.
This plugin has worked really well on all of my sites. Images are compressed and optimized automatically whenever uploading any images. Have not had any recent issues at all. Thanks for the great plugin.
The plugin works, but it is achingly slow. Waiting for the results can take up to one minute. Makes it practically unusable.
UPDATE April 26th, 2015: the plugins works like a charm now that it runs on the WPMU infrastructure and does not rely on the (apparently VERY slow) Yahoo servers anymore. Compressing single images takes just a second now for me, whereas I used to wait for a whole MINUTE before.
Right now, the plugin does strip IPTC metadata that I need on my site, which is why I'm not actively using it. Once that problem is resolved, I will reactivate it and adjust my rating and review.
The plugin and all of its features worked just fine on my site: it's well-executed and lacked any of the kludginess you often see with WP plugins.
Yahoo's dithering algorithm negated the plugins usefulness to me: on bulk conversions the dithering was uneven so I had to double-check each picture and re-upload the ones that were over-dithered.
I think that if you're using the "Save for Web" feature in Photoshop - and you're using it correctly - you're more at risk of damaging your uploaded photos than seeing any page-rendering speed benefit.
Great plugin. It shames it doesn't do large files sizes above 1 Meg, but I know that is the fault of Smuth.it not the plugin.
I must say, the plugin does a very good job. Except that for a long time, I get an error when uploading media. But despite this error, is that the media are imported anyway Through the Library.
works sound on 3.6.1
shame about the yahoo limitation, but that's not the plugin developers fault, that's yahoos fault.
I've used WP Smush.it for several projects now and it works smoothly, a must have plugin if you want your site to be optimized for better overall performance.
