They used to actually smush images and reduce their size, now all they do is a mere %3 size reduction on non-optimized images. I used to get 25% or more and I haven't changed anything on my end with how I render images. The old bait n switch service.
The free WP Smush reduced 190 images by a piddly 3.08%. If you pay a monthly fee they'll reduce some more. There are better options. I use an old software program called Ulead PhotoImpact 11. It does a great job with NO monthly fee.
I've tried this plugin for quite long time, and i thought that it could enlight the most of the images i was posting... then i did a comparison between the non-smushed file and the smushed one...
They had identical size! :|
This used to be a good company and I bought a few of their plugins until recently I purchased wpsmushit pro where they show on their own website the option to reserve exif data. This is not the case, it strips all exif data which I need to reserve. I am currently in a paypal dispute with them to get a refund, they are acting really scammy about the situation and I can't believe I am being hassled over $19.00 of product. These people are ridiculous to deal with, the customer support guy literally laughed in my face over the situation. They are not professional and it's sad that the wordpress community has to deal with these types when it is overall such an awesome community. Sorry but I have no use for a plugin that doesn't operate like it should, there are plenty of free ones on the market that do a better job. Go with a cloud paid version of ewwww plugin. It is cheaper in the longrun because you will get constant updates and you only pay for what you use which is $0.005 per image. It's a lot better option and has more settings and better optimization than this wpmu garbage ever will. WPMU do the WordPress community a favor and throw yourself into the garbage can.
I purchased WP SMUSH PRO (compatible with my version of WP) b/c my file sizes were to large for the free version. Immediately on activation I got the White screen of Death. Took me 2 hours to trouble shoot and restore. The entire time that 24/7 support they advertise was...completely unresponsive. I recommend tinyPNG, doesn't crash my site, works and free.
Do not bother even to install..
After reading many reviews, I felt this plug in would be a solution to compressing images and helping accelerate site load. WOW! Was I in for a surprise.
I first backed-up the site ... thank goodness!
I then ran WP Smush in the 'bulk' mode. All seemed well until ...
I opened the site and saw the front/home page. All images had been shrunk, some icons were moved, the entire top menu was eliminated and more snafu's. The website became totally unusable.
I'm now having to restore the website thanks to this plugin.
If you decide to try this plug-in, BE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR SITE FIRST.
However, given my experience, I can not recommend this plug-in for anyone or any web site. If I could rate it below "1" I would do so.
Using this actually INCREASED my page load times. When I removed it and uninstalled it I will still stuck with higher page load times, I should have never even installed it. I asked a tech a WPMUDEV who said that he uses it constantly and it doesn't effect his page load times either way., so why use it? I dont get this plugin and Im a little aggravated that I lost a fair amount of my page load speed by having it on my site in the first place.
I made a bulk compression of old files, when the plugin crashed my server! I needed the backup from my provider to get the site up again.
Besides Smushit I use these plugins: Duplicate Post, Redirection, W3 Total Cache, WordPress SEO Yoast.
AThere is another problem with the plugin:
I have an image with 207 kb. When I smush the image it says "Smushed by 167 kb (8%)". Obviously this is total nonsense.
And the price policy is the third point to say "Don't use it!"
