Works as intended with a very responsive and supportive developer
Did just what I needed! Developer is very responsive and helpful.
"I am really happy with WP Retina 2x plugin and using it from beginning. Great plugin, Great Author and Great Support :)"
I had a problem with my logo not rendering and Jordy got back to me in record time and helped me figure out the problem with my theme.
Thanks Jordy for being amazing!
Works well with great documentation from the developer.
Many thanks to Jordy Meow for this great plugin.
One improvement proposal:
If the plugin is unable to generate a full resolution retina, it should use the highest available resolution instead.
I have uploaded an image with 1600px width.
In my media settings I have set large images to 1000x1000px.
So the plugin would not be able to generate the retina version 1000px@2x.
Instead of providing no retina image it should use the original one with 1600px resolution as the one for 1000px@2x.
Retina 2x is fairly easy to get working (unlike most of the other retina solutions out there). You have a fair number of options (good for new technology). What's excellent is that there's a recommended solution (publishers want working tech, not to play around). If something changes on the tech front, we can switch to another retina solution without rejigging our code though.
You do have to go up to pro to get what is in fact core functionality: retina images for your full size images.
Current pricing is not $5/year for 3 sites but $15/year for 3 sites. I chose the forever license for three sites for $30. We are tax exempt but tax exemption did not work so we just paid the sales tax (not worth the trouble to try to get this solved). Jordy may wish to work on EU tax exemption when he has the chance.
I hadn't yet thought about the problems that are solved by this plugin, so it's very nice that Jordy has, and made a solution for us all. A solution for a problem I didn't even know my website. :) It works great, and after reading a great review of the product I also trust the technical aspects of the build. A must have!
There was only one problem and one insecurity. The problem was that ewww image optimizer doesn't Always create thumbnails of exact 150x150 pixels (it seems to only use the width as marker) and this retina plugin creates exact in that case a 150x150@2x pixels. At some point I got a warning about the non existense of the matching counterpart. ewww seems to make smaller image files, and I installed it after I read the answer on a support question. I'm not sure about any overlap in functionality. Probably it is more a problem of ewww image optimizer than of retina 2x, but in some cases they don't behave the same way in creating smaller versions of the images.
The insecurity is also about Lazy Load functionality. I had already installed a Lazy Load plugin for images, and now Retina 2x also offers lazy load, and I also use a caching plugin (at the moment w3tc). From the info I couln't conclude if retina 2x's lazy laad functionality would work in combination with w3tc, and since I read that the lazy load of retina 2x was only functional in case a retina image was available I still have another lazy load plugin active. As a non-technical-specialist I'm not sure if thats to much and harms page load. Perhaps there may be some more explicit advice on that subject on the website.
Some website adviced the combination with WP Rocket for caching, for that plugin also has lazy load functionality. But also not in all cases functional. Overlapping functionality is often an issue in using different plugins, and will probably happen more often since a lot of plugins broaden their scope and functionality.
But at the least I feel now a bit more secure about presenting my websites in the best posible manner to all users. Thank you for this plugin.
I end up buying the Pro version so I could have more capabilities, even if I just install and leave it alone it works great, but I wanted more flexibility so I went Pro.
Be careful when you generate all the images automatically, this will create a @2x version of all the photos in your library, I end up going back to my images and manually selected only the sizes I wanted and need it.
To the Pro user there are a lot of options to choose from to work with the images and how they get processed.
Jordy made a great job and the support is very good. The plugin works very good, so my website looks pretty cool, sharp and brillant at all devices. :)
