Only plugin to directly (and correctly) address pages removed from your site.
By , for WP 3.6

When a page is removed from your site, any query for that page by the search engines in particular, or by a visitor to your site is typically given a 404 HTTP status code(Not Found), which is incorrect and doesn't inform the SE's to de-index the page because it is no longer available. The correct status code in this case is a 410 (Page Gone).

This will cause problems in the long run and particularly if anyone has linked to your missing page! This plugin correctly addresses that problem and is the only one I have found that is designed to do exactly that.

410 for WordPress even has a 404 logging feature so that you can see 404 errors that have occurred on your site and gives you the option to convert the logged 404 to a 410 for all future queries, if appropriate. The only short coming I have found is the inability to clear that 404 logging being displayed (it's displayed all the time from the plugins interface, and you can get several), or to be able to turn off the 404 logging when converting the request to a 410 is not the correct action. Let's say for instance; you've had hacking attempts at your blog, or at your WP login which is an all to often occurrence these days and it almost ALWAYS get logged as a 404, thus the interface can become a little unwieldy having to scroll through a multitude of logged 404's, which is why I have only given it 4 stars instead of 5.

That being said, Don't let that dissuade you from using this plugin. It's a great plugin and it does what it was designed to do very well, and, it can save you a lot of headaches in the long-run. Nice job guys...

Nifty 301 Redirect Plug-in
By , for WP 3.6.1

Works great. Used this to replace the old Redirection plugin that no longer works in my 3.6.1 setup.

WP-410 would have received 5 stars but for not having a means to clear the recent errant 404's that a user doesn't want to turn into 410s and a resettable hit counter to determine when the 410s are no longer needed and are safe to delete.

Yes one can add the recent 404's to the 410 list and then delete them. But if a user has a long list of 410s, then that may get a bit troublesome. Other than those two seemingly to me necessities, I can recommend this plugin as the sure-fire way to get Google to stop crawling pages that are long gone and flagging you with them in WBT. !

Seems to run with wpengine.com a server with a specific cache system

installed without problem. Seems to work with nginx cache but not sure because I am not technical. I am getting many 404 errors and updating. great !

Works seamlessly
By , for WP 3.4.2

Installed and set-up without any problems, adding URLs (with wildcards) to the list of 410s is a breeze. Ability to add custom 410.php page to theme is excellent.

Only tiny niggle is the title tag of the 410 page could also be customisable. But aside from that, I can't see how it could be better. Great plugin.
