WordPress HTTPS is intended to be an all-in-one solution to using SSL on WordPress sites.
It even fixes Contactform-7 :-)
Regarding older browsers it would make sense having an option not to force SSL, but instead autofix everything if the site is called at port 443.
I'm running this on a pretty complex MU setup. There are a few little things that are difficult to figure out but all-in-all this is a great plug-in. And the dev works his butt off.
