I am the author of EZ Backup & since I made a major rewrite back in 2012 the plugin has never required any patches or updates.
It continues to work as expected with all of our wordpress installs and our clients wordpress installs. We have used it successfully on several hosts over the years & will continue to use it.
I encourage everyone to give it try.
This plug-in may work properly, for all I know. It made a backup. I don't know if it restores, because I ran into a more pressing problem.
As I played around with the program, I found that I couldn't do some things without paying for those features. I feel this is unacceptable.
What's happening here on WordPress, at least with the plug-ins, is that people are uploading incomplete programs as teasers. They offer partial functionality, some subset of a useful program. When you try to use the full product, you're suddenly told you've got to pay for features.
I don't mind paying for stuff. If I know something costs money, I'll gladly pay if it's worth it. I program, so I understand how much time and effort goes into even a simple product. Asking for payment is reasonable. But I get real upset when the costs are hidden from me.
The programmers may think that they get someone hooked and then he'll pay when he runs into the hidden costs. Maybe some do. When I run into hidden costs, I remove the program.
I encourage developers to explain the costs in their description. Don't make me download and install your product and only then tell me I've got to pay for something. It's dishonest and leaves me wondering what other surprises you may have in store for me. When it comes to my system, I hate surprises.
With this program I'm wondering what happens when I try to do a restore. Maybe I'll get a message, "Psyche! That feature isn't free. Pay up, sucker!"
That probably would never happen, but you get the idea. Once someone starts screwing around with you, there's no way to tell where they'll stop it.
So, as I've done on many other occasions, I'm removing this broken program. Maybe if the developer gets enough negative feedback he'll change his way of doing business.
*** Actually, there was another problem. When I set it up, one of the defaults was a directory named backup_****, where the stars were the plaintext of my password. I cannot even imagine what possessed the author to do something so insecure as that, but it's a serious security hole that should be plugged immediately.
I might be the author of the plugin and my opinion could be considered biased by those who read this, but I am going to post an honest review of the plugin.
WordPress EZ Backup is easy to use & for the in-depth functions it requires to perform its job it works on a fairly universal basis.
Different web hosts will have different setups for their Apache, PHP & MySQL services. WordPress EZ Backup attempts to be compatible with as many hosts as possible. I have been using EZ Backup on all our sites since the day I wrote it. It has come a long way with many improvements in its routine & I try to continue with updates.
The plugin works great for me and my clients.
