Wordfence Security is a free enterprise class security and performance plugin that makes your site up to 50 times faster and more secure.
I've been curious about this plugin for a while and decided to give it a try. This plugin is overkill unless you are on an enterprise class server and need Fort Knox type security for a huge e-commerce site or something with super sensitive information.
It completely broke my site on install and I had to delete everything from the database using myPHPadmin to get it working again.
It is not for the casual user with a normal, everyday wordpress site. If you use good username/password discipline and the Limit Login Attempts plugin, you're probably secure enough in most situations.
I installed it and had a bunch of trouble, woe, and aggravation.
I uninstalled and things got better.
The improvement since uninstalling could be a coincidence....
I've run a few scans, and get result lines like this:
[Dec 10 09:41:47] Adding issue: This file appears to be malicious [Dec 10 09:41:47] Adding issue: This file appears to be malicious
This problem is brought up a couple of times on the support forum, but there's no obvious solution (I did try re-scanning, but it didn't help).
I've been using this plugin for years, and sadly it's just not working well anymore. Scheduled scans almost never complete, and I've received little help in support to figure out why.
If you are for the free, go for it. Just great, the filechange comparison is amazing and helped me a lot several times.
Bought the premium version, support = zero, got more help many times in free forums.
1. Falcon crashed my site, support answered (vaguely) 7 days later.
2. Got aserver complain, too much CPU use, 13 days later no answer at all.
Scans get never completed, they always hang, often for days. The last completed scan I had was several weeks ago. Live traffic shows Google, MSN and other bots as humans. These could be the two features I would use if this plugin only worked.
If you activate this plugin all the time, it can slow down your webhost..
Verhalten.
Live Activity suddenly stopped working. I posted a query here and got no reply. Uninstalled Wordfence and dropped its database tables and things are faster.
Perhaps the devs mean well, and when it worked it was interesting to see where people were visiting from, but when that feature stopped working it brought up the possibility of other features, like those related to site security and not as easily verified, also not working.
Let's just leave this at promising right now. But not production-level.
500 errors, 404 not found in admin area, slow backend, breaks plugins which require a license to validate....
This plugin seems to have a lot of nice features, but I just can't get it to work on my WP installation.
