Plug-in gratefully offers a variety of methods to arrive at the same goal, based on one's comfort level and/or goal.
Unfortunately, this plug-in did not work for me. It seems that the plugin was confused that I was merely trying to swap two similarly-looking URLs; development and production.
The Search & Replace "DRY RUN" feature worked well, producing a valuable report which I ended up leveraging to manually complete my goal (see support post below). However, the plugin halted, when attempting to directly update the database, thereafter.
My Windows hosting platform criteria is as follows, if of any interest:
Notwithstanding the above, I received outstanding support - even over a weekend! See this post.
It used to be a great plugin until the last update. It can not find anything. I try in phpMyadmin and found this;
#1253 - COLLATION 'utf8mb4_unicode_ci' is not valid for CHARACTER SET 'utf8'
Simple, does what it does.
But you should really look to give warning about making backups, or fixing the things the 1 star people wrote. I did not encounter this, but I can see why it would crash thier site. Carelessness on the dev's part such as forgetting, and leaving the field blank can completly destroy your website.
This plugin is very powerful and it would be a five for me if it could be improved further with the ability to search specific tables within an WPMU environment.
At the moment the plugin will search/replace across all the database tables. But, WPMU creates db tables for each individual sub-domain, but inserting the sub-domain id in front of the table name. So for example the posts table on a single implementation would be called '_posts', whereas on a sub-domain WPMU implementation the table for the sub-domain with an id of 7 would be 'wp_7_posts'...if you use search and replace and the search term is repeated across sub-domains it would be replaced in all the sub-domains.
An improvement would be to allow search and replace within an individual sub-domain.
I hope this is of some use to the developers.
Thanks for a great plugin!
This plugin does just what it says but use with caution. The wording isn't all that clear so be sure to backup before using and take your time before doing anything.
REGARDING THE BAD REVIEWS: If you break your site using this plugin it's unlikely to be the plugin's fault. There are oodles of fields in the WordPress Database that hold your site together - accidentally changing some of them can ruin your site.. backup first.
Frank, thanks for creating this really useful plugin!
In the past, when I wanted to do a site-wide search and replace, I had to look up the syntax of the SQL query and take great care to enter the query correctly in phpMyAdmin. This plugin is so much faster and easier!
I'd like to suggest two ways to improve the plugin:
Because of these two issues, I still need to use phpMyAdmin for my information searches; however, I definitely prefer to use this plugin to do the actual search and replace.
Thanks very much,
Worked well for me. Could do a test search for strings in broken image URLs pointing to a test domain before doing the actual find and replace. Saved me lots of time.
Gave this plugin 4 out of 5 stars, as I agree with earlier commenter that the UI could be clearer to differentiate between a test search and a live search and replace.
