I have never even bothered with the free version and went straight for the pro version and all I can say is that it works great!
I had some minor issues which were my own misunderstanding of things and the support was very good and patient with me.
I admit that it takes a bit of getting used to. But again, that might just be me. I have never set up membership site before so I struggeled here and there. But all in all I can recommend s2Member for it's features and for it's most excellent support!
I have used S2 member (Free Framework)for several years on a number of sites. I have one site that uses the pro version. I have not needed support in all that time.
Recently I had a problem on the site with the Pro version.
The problem was sorted in a very short time and even though the fault was totally my fault, (nothing to do with S2 member,)
I have tried other plugins for membership sites but nothing beats S2 member. every instance of something I want to do has been included with this plugin. It is simply brilliant as a membership plugin.
Support really is second to none, never are you made to feel you should know better or you should go away for being so thick. courteous, patient and knowledgeable about all aspects of their software. I wish Websharks made themes.
The Video REALLY helped but at las STILL now that Paypal is all set up the S2 is STILL not restricting the levels as it is supposed to
about 90% of the time when you login it redirects to the 'Login Welcome Page' - but about 10% of the time it does not and takes you to wordpress admin menu.
This is not good enough - I cannot risk a client going to wordpress admin menu, its not professional.
It has to be 100% working or not at all. Uninstalled.
I have used this plugin for 4 sites so far it is great for managing the access to the resources on the site. In two cases I used it a little bit more extensively and run into some troubles.
On West India Committee I used monetization options, selective content display depending on the access level etc. The main problem there were warnings resulting from the plugin using depreciated features. I couldn't turn them off because of the server configuration. I ended up tracking the origin of each warning and silencing them with "@". ^_^'
The second problem happened with Unilink where the client requested shortcodes for secure downloads. s2Member didn't offer the functionality at the time so I had to improvise and write an extension to the s2File shortcode called s2Link.
In short great plugin with a few glitches and gaps in functionality. If those are fixed I would consider it perfect.

I contacted their sales online support and reached Jason Caldwell. The guy is just hard-core awesome. Software organizations as well as others should consider themselves blessed if they have guys like Jason working with them. In this day and age of mediocre to stinky customer service, it was a breath of fresh air. Even if a company has a mediocre product, a great customer service arm of the organization can take the whole company over the top. The cost of maintaining that customer service at that level pays for itself many times over but companies don't seem to understand this fact. Fortunately, the winners do!
Seth Layton, at first I deactivated s2Member plug-in because the interface seem very unfriendly to me. Today I decided to take a second chance and I want to say that it's great and now it seems totally pointless to use anything else now. Thank you so much!
I've been a long time user of the S2Member Framework (free) plugin and just recently purchased the Pro version for the added extras.
Recently I had a couple of questions about the plugin and certain settings. To my amazement, I had an answer in less than an hour & that answer was asking me more about my issues so they could help me better, rather than just spewing out some copy of an unrelated knowledgebase article.
Oh yea.., that answer came from one of the lead developers of the plugin, not some third-party support person from a country I've never heard of.
