This plugin is easy to use and works well. For our dog club site, we wanted some pages and posts to be restricted to club members. This plugin does that easily, and since it is hooked into the menu system, non-members don't even see the restricted pages in their menus.
On some pages, we wanted everyone to access, but some content on the page to be shown only to certain roles. In other cases, we wanted to show certain content only to those not logged on. Again, the Restrict Content plugin does the job easily.
We also use the User Role Editor plugin and have created additional roles beside the standard ones. Since Restrict Content only promises to handle those standard roles, we had to modify the code slightly to handle our new roles. This is not a knock on the plugin, and in fact, there is not a lot of code and it was easy to find where to make the mods.
Before installing, it is a good idea to read these user reviews to discover possible features it does not cover (e.g. media). In our case, the plugin does exactly what we needed with the exception of not handling new roles, but the code turned out to be easy to modify.
Bottom line -- it works, is easy to use and does what it says it will.
The restriction of the post itself seems to work great, but at least for an existing post I noticed that the comments are still visible even when not logged in. Aren't they part of the post and shouldn't they also be restricted...or at least have the option? In our case the comments reveal what is in the post itself and are as, if not more, important than the post itself. Thanks!
Awesome Pippin! This really opens the gate for all sorts of private information being posted without the need for second tier access credentials that I have to use on our 1300 member site right now.
For instance, now with a little finesse we should be able to implement a verified member system versus someone who signed up for a membership but are not actually paying members, whom we do not want to have access to our organization's financial docs, et cetera.
We are in the process of moving our desktop accounting system and membership records to WordPress. Every little plugin helps. Thanks!
Used this plugin for the first time today. It works perfectly with WP 3.5.1 and custom post types.
What would be a great upgrade is if it was able to handle custom user roles.
