Even though it's old, it stil does what it's done for on a recent Buddypress system.
For our educational community, this provides a fantastic and simple way to protect all the member only areas of BuddyPress. 3 simple tickboxes in the WordPress Reading settings make it dead easy to make the front page, blog and feeds, and registration form public. Works well in BuddyPress 1.6.4 (plugin updated January 2013 according to the github repository for this plugin). Lastly, I'm very glad it was mentioned in the WordPress for Education book by Adam Scott.
