The most popular WordPress gallery plugin and one of the most popular plugins of all time with over 12 million downloads.
I got this plugin to get more control over my galleries and improve my social sharing. It was a real headache at first and I had to do some serious headscratching to get things working. I contacted support and by that time I was truly at my end - I am not a pro developer. Just a photographer muddling through - they were supportive. They didn't give up on me. I achieved what I wanted to achieve in the end. Compatibility with other plugins are a bit tricky. There are still some tweaks I would like to make, but waiting for further updates. The moral of the story is that I think this is one of the best plugins for images, it really gives you a lot of scope. Is it a little complex as a result? yes. Is it a walk in the park - no. But is it worth it - yes. My images look really great. Check out my work in progress at
Moral of the story - these guys care about their plugin and the support is there.
I was using an ancient version of NextGen on Clunkbucket. There were some legacy issues to deal with after an update, and the team really helped out in solving the problem quickly so the site could move forward. The old theme was causing problems. After so much time the learning curve in the new NextGen is a little steep, but the power and flexibility built into NextGen is impressive.
I use this tool as project portfolio for my production company. I spent days trying about 30 different plug-ins and none came close to doing what I wanted. NextGen Gallery fit the bill, and although there are (like with all software) a few bugs here and there, they seem to be actively developing and improving this plug in. The support is great, usually a response within 25 hours.
If your site crashes, just do what i did to get it working again.
Remove the nextgen plugin folder via ftp and your site will reload.
Then deactivate all plugins except essential ones.
Reinstall nextgen and it will work fine!
If it doesn't there's a conflict with one of your still activated plugins.
If it installs fine, reactivate plugins one by one till you find the culprit.
I've been through a number of gallery plugins including some of the most popular ones. Nextgen is the one I'm using because it has a more complete feature set (I'm using the Plus version, the stuff in the free version is weak) and works better for me than the others. One really good thing is their support, they do pay attention and get back in good time with good answers (at least until one writes a glowing review, we'll see ;-). I wish it were fully widgetized, and I wish it could do more things, but this is the gallery plugin that works most like the way I think. Highly recommended.
Difficult for me to review properly as I only use a fraction of the features available.
Generally a really good and trouble-free plugin. :-)
Like all software it could be improved, for example the manage galleries feature is a little heavy to find the gallery one wants to manage, if you can't remember where it is - I have over a 100 to sort through...
Simplest fix imo would be a complete listing of gallery names/last updated which one could use the browser search engine on.
I also have an compatibility issue with the plugin and my php installation 5.5.24 , which I emphasise is not the plugin's fault - the way the plugin accesses the MySql db gives a warning when the returned string is empty - normally one can turn off warnings in php, but mine resists :-(
This is a fantastic plugin with a great set of options. Fast, efficient and broad. However... media handling for large sets is still less than optimal. It's significantly better than any others I've used and lightyears ahead of the non-management that generic wordpress comes with.
I'd love to see the CSS and HTML5 love given to gallery display aimed at gallery and asset management. It'd turn this great plugin in to a world class, everyone must have it, asset manager.
Works well--wish I could put videos in the galleries, but perhaps that will come later ;) Support is quick and helpful.
This is a full-featured gallery plugin, and you can do a lot with it. Two thoughts though:
1) The documentation blows. Worse than having no documentation ... the website has inaccurate, outdated documentation. So you think you have the answer, and then you go crazy triple-checking your shortcode syntax and wondering why your gallery isn't working right. Bad bad bad. You shouldn't push a release until the docs are up to date. Software 101.
That said, support hooked me up with the new, correct shortcodes quickly, and were very friendly about it. So, only 1 star off for this.
2) The premium filmstrip gallery is not amazing and is limited in what it can do. So get Royalslider, which legitimately is amazing, and makes NextGen really shine.
Overall I've been able to accomplish what I wanted with this plugin. I had to hack it a bit, and I had to make a couple compromises, but it ended up fine. And the uploader makes it sort of the only game in town if you want to build an interactive gallery-based website. So there's that.
The NGG site we built is at [ link redacted, please do not post links in reviews ], if anyone wants to see it in action. That Royalslider interface though ... so sweet.
