Awful update
By , for WP 3.8

Chinese title can not be supported. Some templete like carousel is incorrectly linked, though the title was renamed.

Still broken
By , for WP 3.8

Tested on my development pc with WordPress 3.8 and latest NextGen release 2.0.40 yet it is still writing hundreds of entries to wp_options table.
It used to work perfectly for my sites but version 2 has broken it.
One click on a gallery generated 20 entries in the database so until this is fixed NextGen is disabled on my live site where it had caused thousands of unnecessary entries in wp_options.

DB issue
By , for WP 3.8

Since few week, this plugin put lot and lot entry in the wp_options table and it's really slow my web site.
The only way I found was to make a cron like explain here : NextGEN Gallery [resolved] wp_options to many records/a>.

2.0 is the WORST thing they happen with NGG
By , for WP 3.8

Confusing, broken and no custom templates.
Just a lot of pointless and confusing settings to try sell the PRO version.
I use WP and NGG to make custom and very nice galleries for my clients and when someone accidentally upgrade the version EVERYTHING broken in the website.
Meanwhile, the native gallery of WP is even better, with a lot of good settings inspired in OLD VERSIONS of NGG.
Shame, one of the best of best plugins of WordPress became an useless crap.

Worse than it was
By , for WP 3.6.1

It was a good plugin some time ago. But now each update gives a new surprise. Old templates don't work properly and new template system isn't ready. The widget to show random or recently added images doesn't have enough functionality, so I have had to add some code to template but now some attributes of acquired images have gone. So I stopped using widget. Finally, I can't create new gallery without having to load at least one image via web interface. I'm sorry to see development in such bad way.

easy to use and very effective

2.0 has been buggy so switched back to 1.9.13
By ,

Used to be one of my favorite plugins and I used it all over my site. I liked things like being able to cross-index photos both as posts and in albums. I also liked general performance and interface.

Unfortunately, the 2.0 release has been a mess. Features that were working now got broken and major performance issues were introduced with polluting the MySQL database and using a lot more memory. There might be some new features but these seem to be over-shadowed with things that were broken.

The support forum seems to have some activity with problems reported and perhaps some being fixed. However, after still encountering more issues with this churn, I eventually gave up and reverted back to the last release in 1.9 which seems to be much more stable and works well.

When it comes time to do the next large web project - I will stop and evaluate other alternatives because NextGen used to be pretty good but at least recently is not one I recommend.

My first update from 1.9 to 2.0.40 has been OK

Just want to share my experience. I'm running NextGen Gallery on many sites and I decided to wait as much as I could to avoid all the problems that the new NextGen was showing up. Today I decided to try to upgrade on a personal site where I have few galleries and photos (34 galleries and 350 images) and where I run NextGen in conjunction with: Justified Image Grid and FooBox. I made a backup then I started the upgrade from 1.9 to 2.0.40: everything proceeded smooth and when it ended my website was running as usual, no probs at all. My advise, if you can afford it, is to use some good 3d party plug-in to render out your photos (like JIG and FooBox) this will help a lot.
