A user, role, and content management plugin that makes WordPress a more powerful CMS.
I looked through a lot of different plugins - I found this one to be the simplest to use and powerful enough to do everything I wanted! Thanks!
funziona perfettamente :-)
Every product developer could learn a lesson from Justin, because while this plugin has a tiny feature set, it's the core of tons of sites that have used it to do amazing things. More than 100,000 sites have used it, for good reason.
The plugin lets you create roles (and define the associated rights) and lets you protect content to those roles. That's it. Two features. And yet, those two features, with a couple of additional free plugins, let me build a membership site in less than 20 minutes. I'm serious, I timed it. 19:56. I should have recorded it.
Anyway, here are three reasons you'll love it.
First, because it is scoped tightly, it can be used with many different plugins. You'll notice that the Nav Menu Roles plugin doesn't know anything about Members, but works with it cleanly because all it knows is that it is protecting menu items by the role that is already configured in WordPress. It doesn't know who created it or is managing it, and it doesn't matter. Members just does it's thing.
Second, it doesn't get in the way of what you're doing, or try to do too much. There is no question that Justin knows what he's doing and knows the "WordPress way" to integrate his plugin into the core of the WordPress code. So it snaps into place easily and effectively but doesn't overreach and try to do too much. The result? You can use PayPal, Stripe, or anything else to collect payment and Members doesn't care. It will simply do the two things it's meant to do, and let you do the rest on your own.
Thirdly, If you're trying to build something complicated, you're likely going to use this as a baseline and build other features around it. That's why this is a developer-favorite.
We really needed to keep some non-coder type people locked down to specific edit access. Members was the perfect solution to keeping our sites stable, and our clients happy!
Great plugin - simple and straightforward to use. Lock down pages or posts based on roles or capabilities. Allows you to also add custom capabilities and custom roles so you can extend WordPress' users functionality.
Custom editing of user roles allows for specific tailoring of client access, so the functionality of the site can be upheld.
There are two big capabilities this plugin can give you: editing and/or creating custom roles with exactly the permissions you want, and locking off access to parts of your site so that only users with specific role(s) can read them.
The role editor is simply fantastic. The page access controls are excellent as well - just do realize going in that as of 0.2.4 you may run in to a couple limitations on what that part of the plug-in can do:
- You must edit page access settings one page at a time - the plugin cannot automatically assign permissions changes on a page to child pages.
- Page content is hidden, but not the page title. The page's existence does show up in places like site search or auto-generated (fallback) navigation menus. If you want to go so far as to remove any indication of the page's existence from users who are not logged in/are not one of the approved roles, you will need some of your own PHP code to accomplish this.
Even if these are things you may want to address, this plugin is a rock solid foundation for any developer, and a great tool for anyone needing greater control over their WordPress site.
Works just the way it should :-)
