After a lot of research and moments of angst and trepidation.... I downloaded and installed Jetpack.
I read many horror stories from the past but apparently things have been worked on and improved.
I am starting an insurance agency so funds are tight and I can't afford big cdn's like Max CDN.
While I'm not a developer, I am an ex IT admin so I know the importance of page speed for google and bing placement.
I had been experiencing page speed average of between 4.95 second up to 13 seconds. I just had too many requests.
I found out about Cloudflare and their free CDN and free SSL served from the CDN to the client page....
I got that working after about a month of trial and error.
I then installed W3 Total Cache and between the two that knocked my page speed tests down to about 4.25 but I was still averaging between 60-90 requests.
I took a chance and installed jetpack just for the Photon image "CDN" and now I'm finally at fantastic load times. Page Speed and Yslow have been averaging around 1.75 seconds and on pingdom I've been tested as low as 850ms.
I don't have a huge website footprint like Facebook or Yahoo or ESP, but it's fairly large but now I'm down to 28-3 requests and at 850ms, Pingdom says I'm testing faster than 97% of their tested sites. I can't complain about that I don't think. Now I just need to spend a little bit of money for Google/Bing and Yahoo adds and finish my yelp and Merchant Circle and Facebook pages and I might just start getting somewhere.
I'm happy happy happy.
Oh and just an update... I've been running Cloudflare minify and rocketloader for 2 days now and Photon is holding strong. It would seem that you guys have been doing a lot of work in the last year or two!!!!!
Thank you very much folks!
Kudos for the outstanding plugin. Very friendly language.
The only annoying thing is having to click the "full features" button to configure them.
Makes turning off multiple features a bit longer than it needs to but otherwise, does as advertised.
I'm not a huge fan of all the modules but I don't use them all. That's one of the reasons I like this plugin. I don't have to use everything. I have a choice! I'm sure somebody will and does use everything and to those that do: awesome!
I've used this plugin as a learning reference when it comes to plugin development and believe it or not, my PHP chops as well. Yes, I learned a lot from looking at the code and how it's utilized.
In all it's a great plugin to use and learn from.
Wonders if James will actually read this
I struggled a little when I moved my site from wordpress.com - missed a lot of features. So thank you for this. Especially like the stats, as a quick alternative to more in-depth external options.
any time I try and activate this it takes my whole site down. I have to go into my FTP and manually delete the plug in just to get my site back up. I was really hoping that this latest update would have solved the issue.
All in one functions to enhance WordPress but i have some troubles.
After the last update my whole site was not visable anymore in Windows. Apple and Android didn't give any problem but in Windows nothing was visable: complete white site. I reinstalled the backup of my site and the problem was solved. My advise: do not update this plugin before you make a proper backup. In fact: I wouldn't update at all.
Publicize needs to make the social sharing buttons more visible by allowing them to be both above and/or below the posts/pages.
Something that's mostly Facebook's fault is that often the wrong image will be publicized on facebook. The og:image pulls any image on the page that it thinks is the biggest even if the image is totally inappropriate. There doesn't appear to be any solution other than to disable facebook from Publicize and putting post titles and links manually.
User interface for the various modules could be improved too, it's a bit confusing.
