Defeat automated spambots (even the new 'learning' bots with dynamically named hidden fields) by adding a client side generated checkbox.
Does exactly what it promises and no interference with other plugins.
GASP Is not blocking SPAM comments anymore.
It worked for a number of months, but in recent weeks the SPAM comments are increasing. Seven (7) this morning in only 12 hours from last eve.
Yes I changed the checkbox name - no change.
I had lots of issues with other plugins that added an extra field regular commenters wouldn't see. The idea was that spammers accessing comments through a back door would fill in that field and immediately be identified as spammers. But all those caused issues for my real audience who wanted to comment. This plugin solved that by requiring legit commenters to identify themselves (easily) as legitimate. Sure, spammers who just troll sites and manually comment can get through, but that's the problem with spammers, isn't it? There's no single way to block them all.
The easiest and quickest way to cut down on comment spam. Works great.
Didn’t find it effective at all, in fact my observation was that spam increased significantly after I disabled other anti-spam plugins (except Akismet) and enabled this one. I think the root of the problem lies here (referring to another product). It appears I am having to deal with this type of “semi-automated” spam:
I think our definitions of “automated” spam differ quite a bit. It’s true that a good portion of automated spam comes in the form of direct POSTs to a blog; your plugin will definitely block these. But there are several forms of automated spam that come in the form of scripted bots that load the page in a browser (headless or otherwise) and actually fill out the form to trigger the postback. There is little that distinguish these from regular comments besides the time it takes to complete the form, and the often gibberish-level content submitted. These spam comments are also “automated” but will make it past your plugin. Granted they are much more rare, but have proven to be an issue on many sites I’ve worked with.
I've been using Growmap for over five months now, and my comment spam went from nearly 300 per day to zero. I haven't had to change the checkbox's name once. Moreover, it didn't reduce the number of legitimate comments. You can see the results of my little case study here.
Plugin appears to work very well. Had to make a minor style change to get it to integrate well with my page as the checkbox width was inconsistent; this was easy to do as all that was required was to comment out line 322 which contains:
gasp_cb.style.width = "25px";
Other than that, the plugin does what it claims and does it well. Would love to have a stats page just to see how many attempts were bounced but I guess that would require persistence and I do like how it doesn't require additional tables in my WP DB.
This is one of the best plugins to stop spamming and it is not annoying. Easy to install and use, and it works perfectly with any themes I've tested on. Thank you very much.
I think the title of my review says it all.
