The free plugin installed no problem but with a completely clean install of WP and the GeoDirectoy Starter Theme it still has bugs.
The theme customiser won't load at all and you're limited to locations in one city with the free version. Everything else is an add on which must be bought. Users trying to add a listing which doesn't match the one city you've chosen will receive seven pop up error alerts by the browser with no option to correct it. There is also a very precise format to addresses but no obvious documentation on what this format is.
It looks really nice and could be great software but the developers grossly over promise what the free software is capable of.
Great potential - functions are second to none on the market but early days, another directory beta release by developers for developers
BUT..it does not turn any theme into the directory you have dreamed of
Overlooks the fact that most WP users want plugins that dont require massive amounts of coding to make it compatible with a theme
It mostly hijacks any theme you install it on, styling is not independent of function, you lose the ability to use your existing theme - it's confused about being a theme or plugin
Styling is terrible, looks like web design from 20 years ago
Doesnt work with genesis themes, creates virtual pages, not flexible in terms of page creation, WP menu items, no shortcodes, using it without maps
Support good but they will be stuck fixing a million theme specific issues unless they stick to making this a set of plugins that work in ANY WP theme
Hold on until its stable and it looks decent
The plugin has some potential but it is very early days and there are lots of bugs - for example the maps provides directions to the wrong place, the taxonomy description is all messed up and doesn't work.
Be prepared to do a lot of work yourself modifying codes to get even basic functionality working.
Worth keeping an eye on though because it does offer a good potential - though very expensive if you take on all the addons.
I'd wait before buying though - if they have major bugs in the core plugin then the paid for addons are likely to be buggy too.
Update: the latest version 1.0.2 has dealt with all the major issues so I've increased the rating.
This is not really suitable for operators of a number of websites. This is very time demanding to keep up with all the updates and the problems that those updates bring about including incompatibility with add-on plugins. The site I have this opeating on (until I get time to transfer it back to a more suitable plugin) is without doubt one of the most time consuming and demanding web sites I have ever operated.
I would recommend giving this about a year to settle down and become stable before taking it beyond development and into an active site.
Still worth keeping an eye on for when it finally become a reliable and stable plugin.
