A Free Directory Plugin You Can Build Upon
By , for WP 4.2.3

The Business Directory Plugin provides a comprehensive list of features needed by most directories. It's ideal if you're just getting started and require a basic free system that you can build upon. If you require more functionality, low-cost add-on modules are available. I found the extra modules to be very valuable and I received fantastic support provided by the plugin's owner and the plugin's programmer. I suggest you give the Business Directory Plugin a try. It could be everything you need.

Best Directory Plugin, hands down!

Tried using so many other directory plugins that have confusing options, less attractive looks and not so great usability.

Great plugin for even the most advanced directory website. Much recommended!

Crappy plugin, crappy support, and crappy look
By , for WP 4.2.2

After wasting months and hundreds of dollars trying to get this plugin working how I wanted and, in reality, how it should work, I got fed up and decided to look at other plugins again.

On the WPBD support forum, their attitude is "It doesn't do that, and if you want it to, you need to pay us a crap load of money." I haven't found a single feature this crappy plugin has that Sabai doesn't.

Ignore this plugin and search the others for one that fits your needs. Don't fall for the free plugin with $199 premium modules like I did.

Works well!

Completely excited that I came across this plugin for my new directory. The support has been immediate and professional. Aside from a few tweaks, the plugin works like a charm and the documentation has been very helpful.

Best directory plugin

I have used WP for many years and have yet to find a better directory plugin than this one. Solid as a rock, it works flawlessly with so many other plugins due to its custom post type implementation and other adherence to standards. As a result I have bought a premium module and intend to buy another to show my appreciation to the developer and recommend that everyone does the same to support the development of this great plugin.

Works, but limited

The software works as advertised, and it is well-supported. You can certainly created a directory right out of the box. The directory functions pretty much as described.

However, the system's design is limited and quite inflexible. It uses a single WordPress page to display all the directory pages, and this creates numerous issues.

Among other things, the software does not provide any differentiation in the HTML code between different pages. So if you want to use CSS to affect one directory page but not another directory page, you're out of luck.

Rather than use the superior WP commenting system, which won't work with BD's single-page-for-all approach, they've created their own commenting system, thereby making it more vulnerable to spam attacks.

When these weaknesses are brought to the plugin creator's attention, their response is that the weaknesses are really WordPress's fault because, in the plugin creator's view, WordPress's taxonomy system (which allows creation of custom pages like the one used in this system) is inherently flawed. The reason? It doesn't enable a business directory plugin creator the ability to maintain complete control over programming that the plugin creator wants to monetize.

Personally, I find that excuse to be pretty weak.

They could easily use WordPress's taxonomy system as it is written. And even if they didn't, they could still provide HTML hooks to allow template designers to use CSS to modify their directory pages stylistically. All that is required is a unique identifier, which already exists. If there were no unique identifier, the system would be incapable of deciding which directory page to show under which circumstance.

When I pointed out that it's good to give users the ability to template their own designs for the directory pages, they responded that that creates too many problems for the programmers.

Say what? This is WordPress we're talking about, right? The platform that crows about its ability to template individual designs?

Apparently, the plugin creator doesn't share that vision.

So while the plugin does function as advertised, I don't expect this software to grow and evolve over time. There's too much resistance from the plugin's creator for that to happen anytime soon.
