I use this on many sites, and BPS Pro on a few more. I wouldn't set up a WordPress site without it!
I use this plug-in in tandem with WordFrence and IP GeoBlock. I see in the logs that there are attempts to get in, but all fail. I am using some, but not all of their custom code. I'm very pleased with the amount of protection provided with this robust, free plug-in. Will be upgrading to pro soon, just to get notified when there are database changes.
I tried this on two different machines that I admin. In both cases, it rendered the site non-functional. The plugin has a dependency on mod_rewrite and also on mod_access_compat. It won't work without those two plugins running in Apache. On the last installation, the check "verified" mod_access_compat was loaded when it really wasn't.
I corresponded with the support people and their response was that "for a NORMAL hosting environment, it works great."
I can understand that it doesn't work in a particular environment. However, I think that if the plugin is installed in an environment that it can't work in, then it should not crash your site to the ground.
If you are not running in "a standard hosting environment", then I would be extremely careful about selecting this plugin. Also, if you're developing with a local copy of PHP/WordPress, I would be very careful.
My web host uses a heavily customized version of Apache 1.3, which does not support the latest iteration of BPS but leads to 500 Server Error failure if installed.
After posting a one-star review here, I was promptly directed to a workaround that seems to fix the problem. The post is here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/500-error-when-updating-to-531?replies=10#post-7783030
So I'm upping the rating to 4 stars because the product does have value for WordPress sites. I'm docking one star from a 5 star rating for the hassle I had to go through to get my site working again.
The plugin works perfectly. The installation might not be straightforward if you have modified your .htaccess file before manually or because of other plugins, but the support is great and you will overcome any problem in a very short period of time.
I have used a few security plugins in my time, but Bulletproof is among the best there is. It is easy to use now and powerful. I wholeheartedly recommend this one for keeping the bad guys out.
Thank you for this great plugin
I posted on their forum for some support to try and get two bugs fixed as it was a very minor annoyance to me but could effect other people in a negative way, especially the second of the two main bugs.
I was met with links to some "guides" that that I had already read and couldn't help me at all with the issues.
I replied explaining that it is in their interest to fix them as two of the main bugs are global bugs that could effect others and for me personally it wouldn't make a huge difference if they didn't fix them but I was willing to work with them to get a fix for my minor annoyance and potentially a major problem for other people.
They replied again saying that they couldn't help any more with the free plugin support (seems a no brainer to me, why wouldn't you want to fix a bug could effect any of their users.)
Certainly not a wise way to "entice" people into buying their "pro" version. and then to top it off, they replied with "We already what you were up to. Your account has been deleted." for some reason... I was actually considering purchasing their pro version just to get the minor annoyance fixed and request a very small feature but that move cemented my decision into not purchasing their pro version, giving this bad review and finally uninstalling their plugin.
Fantastic way to lose someone who is genuinely trying to help them, their members while getting a very small reward from it.
This is one of the view times i had a more then great customer support experience. Edward Alexander really knows his stuff and on top of that is a great guy to communicate with.
