I was using wp-better-security but it really went downhill after changing to iThemes with virtually no support. I was able to setup bulletproof security and do all the customization I needed with no trouble at all. Looking at the support forum it looks like all the reported issues have been resolved.
Initially, I used Better WP Security (before it became part of iThemes), and it interfered with WordPress. Then I performed a significant amount of research, I chose BulletProof Security. I am pleased with its function and integration with WP.
It could be a bit more user friendly and the design could be updated, but it is not the most important aspect of the product for me - and it is free. I do recommend supporting these guys by donating something for their great efforts and results.
Over a 25 year period, I was a technical pre-sales, sales, and WW product manager for mainframe security products in a Fortune 500 company.

I use this plugin in my web and it prevented some unknown logins to enter. :)
Thanks a lot!
Not only the plugin is great but the support is greater than the plugin.
thanks a lot
It's a great security plugin, and the support forum is great. The only issue is with the obsolete design, but I guess it's not that important with a security plugin.
Title says it all. They actually like what they do and really educate people and explain things.
For those that like to learn, there is an unbelievable amount of information in their forum.
Personally I've noticed that when a plugin author gets very popular they usually offer both free and premium versions of their plugin and tend to not pay that much attention to those that do not have the premium version. That's not the cause with BPS.
More than one million downloads and they provide great service.
I review my server logs constantly and between BPS has helped keep my sites secure.
I use BPS on practically all my websites that use Apache (BPS doesn't work under nginx), mostly as a preventive measure: none of them was ever hacked. But there is always a first time, and, to avoid that "first time", I make sure that BPS does it job. So far, so good!
BPS is a little tricky to configure. It has many options and requires several steps to complete the initial installation; after each upgrade, it requires a manual "reset" (easy to do) to make sure that all files are properly in place. It's also a bit tricky to make sure that it plays nicely with other plugins which might reconfigure .htaccess (like most cacheing plugins). Its interface departs completely from the usual WordPress UI standards and looks a bit anachronistic. Those are the only reasons for giving it just 4 out of 5 stars; at the core, what it does — protecting your website from intrusion — it does beautifully, and without any loss of performance.
As WordPress increases in popularity, and in spite of its already many built-in security features, hackers become increasingly more persistent in finding ways through WordPress's standard security. BPS is a welcome addition that will keep hackers away, as long as it is properly installed and maintained.
No trouble since first install!
This plugin makes each WordPress blogger life easier & safe.
Perfect plugin at all!
