I really loved Better WP Security, I even donated to its creator. Now however, it seems it is going the wrong direction; and moreover, there isn't any accountability on iThemes' part.
I got problems with the upgrade just like everyone else. And when I had problems, I thought I would wait before writing a review. So eventually iThemes responded with this:
This what really got me upset. I think iThemes is not taking an responsibility whatsoever for what caused those upgrade problems. What iThemes have in its response is a list of some of the most common problems without a clear explanation on how to fix them. iThemes also states that it is only a small portion of people who have these problems; however for some reason I doubt that (ased on the number of 'low-star' reviews); and I am sure it is easy to create 'high-star' reviews, so I will not trust any high-star reviews until the product is consistent.
iThenmes knows it is a problematic update, they even moderated comments on http://ithemes.com/2014/03/17/better-wp-security-plugin-changing-ithemes-security-need-know/ because of the negative comments they are getting! This company is not handling a stressful situation properly.
I will give it one more day. If the issues persist, then I am off to WordFence or any other Security plugin.
To Chris, the creator of Better WP Security. I had a lot of respect to you, and still do. But make sure you fix your plugin or otherwise your reputation that you worked on for years can be immediately 'tarnished' by bad reviews. I am sure you understand that, especially that you are producing a security plugin where quality is paramount.
I've come to trust the Better WP Security plug-in, so assumed the upgrade would be more or less painless.
Locked out of my site, so I guess it's time to ssh into the back end and disable the plugin directory... hopefully that will fix things and the problems aren't now deeper than that!
Judging from the number of comments since the release, I'm thinking there couldn't have been much in the way of beta testing...
The lowest I'm able to rate appears to be one star... but given the experience I'd really like it to be a big fat 'zero'!
I have used "Better Word press Security" for quite some time and been very successful with the operation of the plugin, but with the changeover thus far the results are a disaster.
I have recommended the Better Word press Security" plugin to all my clients an all of them no longer have access to there websites. I am now faced with "fix it or I will take my business elsewhere"!
The intent to improve the plugin I'm sure was a well intended effort however after now after everything fails the only way to access your site back end is to ftp in and delete the plugin entirely the result is that we must install some other security plugin to be protected or as has happened the nefarious element trying to break into your site will prevail.
You have single handedly scored more points for the bad guys than any one can imagine or could plan to do.
Please reinstate the previous version for those of us that want to stay in business.
Update left me with a 404 when trying to access my admin dashboard, effectively locking me out of my own site. As soon as I figure out what to do about this (rather major) problem, I don't believe I'll ever use this plugin again. This is beyond unacceptable.
Just a little truth in advertising: the overwhelming number of 5 star ratings are for Chris' original Better WP Security plugin prior to its becoming iThemes Security.
From what I can see at this writing, there is only one 5-star rating for iTSec; all the rest are 1-star.
It was a perfectly good plugin until ithemes screwed around and fucked it up. Now some of my other plugins don't work anymore and I am locked out from one of my sites. Good work!
Is there a safer way to uninstall the plugin without
The plug-in broke my site and would not allow me to access my dashboard. I eventually had to remove from my FTP file all together. Also, the developer has been completely unresponsive.
(On Windows Server)
Just a word of caution to plugin users.
The plugin has a habit of blocking Googlebot and returns excessive errors in Webmaster Tools which resulted in my first page rank being completely removed and now the site no longer appears in SERPS.
For those who rely on Google rankings to generate revenue, this plugin could destroy any chance you have unless the developers come up with something that will not get in the way of crawlers.
PS, I allow the bots to crawl everything so it's not the Robots txt file but what iThemes writes to the htacess file.
Developers, you need to fix this or come up with something that remedies this problem because it damages websites in Google.
Getting locked out of my Dashboard after every time I would update the plugin started getting really old. I am torn whether I will keep this update. If I do, I will likely never update it again.
Tired of this ALWAYS breaking my site.
I am running the latest version of WordPress with the default Twenty Fourteen theme - exactly - all standard stuff.
