WPMU DEV makes some good, solid plugins, and provide excellent support. But, this plugin almost forces you to purchase their services before it becomes useful.
I understand WPMU needs to make money, but it seems to me that the way they promote their services in this plugin violates the WordPress.Org TOS as there is very little that can be done without purchasing the WPMU DEV Anti-Splog API key.
My suggestion, be less forceful in pushing usage of the API, and instead, rely upon the paid services to motivate buyers.
All that said, this low rating is for the sales methods embidied in the plugin. The WPMU plugins have and do work well.
I've used this plugin on another site I work for and it is an excellent plugin very powerful. But.. I have to agree with WebNashr it should at least warn people from the start that this is not the complete plugin. Thanks to ActionJackson676 there is a fix for the broken aspect of the free part of the plugin but WPMuDev should know better than to let people use a broken Plugin. If they are going to allow a free side to this it shouldn't be throwing errors in the Admin area.
All and all a solid plugin but poorly implemented for non premium users. Because of this I give it 3 stars.
Just like the description says, not everything requires the premium API.. However, if you do not include one it will leave an error message at the top of your admin pages, when you click dismiss it just brings you to the place to enter your API.
Once you install the plugin, click edit (on the plugin page), hit ctrl F and search for "Anti-Splog is not fully enabled."
$ust_settings = get_site_option("ust_settings"); $expire = get_site_option("ust_key_dismiss"); if (!$ust_settings['api_key'] && !isset($_GET['dismiss']) && !($expire && $expire > time())) echo "<div id='ust-warning' class='error fade'><p>".sprintf(__('Anti-Splog is not fully enabled. You must <a href="%1$s">enter your WPMU DEV Premium API key</a> to enable the powerful blog and signup checking. <a href="%2$s">More info»</a>', 'ust'), "$ust_admin_url-settings", 'http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/anti-splog'). ' <a title="'.__('Dismiss this notice for one month', 'ust').'" href="' . $ust_admin_url . '-settings&dismiss=1"><small>'.__('Dismiss', 'ust')."</small></a></p></div>";

Do not delete the } ... This will remove the annoying message at the top of your admin area.
The plugin's main point (the API key) isn't free so without a premium account from WPMU DEV you cannot use this plugin at all!
I don't see any point on putting a plugin which is not really free here! (except to bother people for nothing)
Great stuff! Saves so much time!
I have not found anything close to this plugin and surprisingly.. it works really well:)
Spammers beware! This plugin will stop you in your tracks.
