 * Hello AroundKW. I just wanted to quickly post a reply and say that we appreciate
the work you have put into the plugin, the new features you released and are
   releasing in the near future.
We will be re-writing the review to reflect the
latest changes and changing the star rating accordingly.
 * Thanks again.

 * Hello scoopsmiles. I am sorry, but there is very little that can be done if you
are getting an error and can not access the db.
You could check your error log
to see what errors were recorded and you can ask your host to increase your memory
   if that is the issue.
 * The problem that theme developers face is that the wordpress import plugin has
not been updated in a while, doesnt work with the latest version of wordpress
and has many, many known issues within it.
 * As you can see, even wp tavern posted about it as it seems really odd that such
a vital plugin from the WordPress team is essentially abandoned.
 * The only way I could get the import to work was to move the site to a new location
where I could play with it (as it was a live site) and then submit the import
and pray it worked. Sometimes when you get an error, it has been suggested that
if you refresh a few times, it can make it import. I have spent close to a week
assigning all the images to the correct posts and fixing many issues caused by
   the import.
 * Another suggestion would be to install your theme and manually add the content
yourself based on their guide as that would not require the import. I know that
is less than desirable, but it is all that is left if the import doesnt work
and the theme developer is unwilling to assist you.
I have seen some theme developers
import the content into one of our sites with no issues at all. When we replicated
their steps, all we got was issues so it could be due to the computer OS which
has been suggested in the past by some theme developers.

 * I just ran a test of my own and everything imported. Sort of.
 * The wordpress importer confirmed that all media files had been imported, listing
only a few. It did not list any posts, pages or anything else, yet they had all
   been imported.
When I checked the media library, there were 425 unattached to
any post. When I check the posts, the link it uses for all media files within
posts is the old address and not the new one.
 * It seems to me that it is importing everything, but not changing the link to
the media in posts and pages as well as not assigning the media to the posts
   or pages.
 * A real pain.
 * Hope this helps you.

 * Ok, I ran some tests to see what the issue could be for my site. With this site,
I am importing an xml backup of site A into a copy of site B as I am merging
two sites together, so it is a little more complex than the issue you are having.
 * Here is what I did:
    1) disabled all plugins except contact form 7 which will
have items in my import. 2) Disabled all ithemes security settings 3)disabled
w3 total cache and disabled all options 4) enabled twentyfourteen theme 5) uploaded
xml file to wordpress import and selected “assign posts to an existing user”
and “Download and import file attachments”.
 * I figured that the plugins and theme could be trying to process imported items
such as media, which could cause the issue.
 * The end result is far from perfect as all media imported is unattached to any
post, which I will need to do manually. A real pain with 425 images! Also, all
images within posts are linked to the OLD location, so I will need to find and
replace their links within the database so that they point to the correct location.
 * In your case, it is likely that the xml import file does not contain any of the
data for your theme, just posts, pages, images etc.
 * Please let me know how it goes on your end and make sure you frequently backup,
you can never have too many backups.
 * Thanks

 * That is a huge issue. I have seen many theme developers create their own import
plugins, but they can be a nightmare too as they need the site to be a clean
   install.
 * I am working on an import now and have it on a test account so I can play with
   it without worrying.
 * By the way Big Dave, I am also Dave and my friends call me Big Dave, nice to
   meet you 🙂
 * First I think it is best that we check what size and volume we are importing.

The file I have is 1.4MB It is a complete export of everything possible. I do
not have a lot of posts, under 200 for sure.
 * What size is your import? Is it a full import of everything or do they provide
separate imports for different areas? What theme is it?
 * I will update you when I have more info. Once I have ran tests and can see a
clear path, I will let you know and I can help you if you like. If the method
works for both of us, I can publish it as a guide so it can help others.
 * Many thanks

 * No, you are not doing anything wrong. There are serious issues with this plugin
   that have not been addressed.
 * I posted the info below in a different ticket, but will add it here as it relates.
 * We have seen this problem a lot in the past as we frequently move sites for our
clients. It is (to say the very least) a complete and utter nightmare.
    It is
also worth noting that when installing the plugin, you even get a warning that
it has not been tested with the latest WordPress version, is only compatible
up to 3.8.3 and was last updated some 7 months ago. However, there may not be
a need to update it, but the least they could do is update the “compatible up
to” so that you do not get the warning when installing it.
 * WP Tavern covered this a while back: [http://wptavern.com/whats-going-on-with-the-wordpress-importer](http://wptavern.com/whats-going-on-with-the-wordpress-importer)
 * Issues reported here: [https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18602](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18602)

   and here: [https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/16404](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/16404)
 * There seems to be no resolution or action on updating the code.
 * From my experience, the issues are:
    1) 500 Internal Server Error 2) Other general
failure (for large files only) 3) Images either a) dont import, b) import but
are unassigned to any post or page, c) link to the old location or d) a mix of
   a-c.
 * The only solution that I can actively find is to manually export the posts from
the database, update the post numbers so they are after the last post number
on your new site, import it, upload images from the old site to the new site
and lastly do a find and replace to fix all links to your old site so they point
   to your new site.
That is a real pain, but it seems that there really is no
   other way.

 * Hello and thank you for your replies. We have been busy with new projects and
I haven’t been able to check your last reply until now.
 * 1) I would love to test that. Maybe we can also review your premium add-ons?
 * 2) Great to hear I could help.
 * 3) I think the easiest way is to have the pins/images assigned to the category
and to the posts. When viewing more than one category, the category pins/images
are used. When viewing one category, the post pins/images are used.
    The issue
at the moment is that if someone views all businesses, it can seem very confusing
if they all have different or the same pins.
 * 4) There is nothing you can do about the accuracy of the location data being
provided. However, you could have an option to not check the users location and
set where to center the map.
For my project, we have a small number of businesses
within one area. If I load the map, it shows all pins, plus my pin, but as my
pin is miles out, the map is huge and the businesses we list are a small group
in one corner. Another option could be added that would allow the user to load
their location so that they can see where they are, but to be honest I do not
think that is needed too much as google can provide directions to get to the
location. After all, my location does not mean I am in the area. I could be thousands
of miles away researching which restaurant to take my family to. I believe that
there are two types of users you would have visiting a site using your plugin.
These are users who are in the area and users who plan to visit the area. If
the user plans to visit the area, you really do not need to show their location
pin on the map. That leads me to another thought. Maybe you could have an option
such as “display users location on map only if they are within x miles/km of
   one pin on the map”.
 * 5) If I am not mistaken, it shows the users location pin on the map when it loads.
Please forgive me if I am wrong, I do not have time at the moment to go and check
   the test instal I made.
Off the top of my head, this item is effected by #4
   mentioned above.

 * Hello, I will add my comments below.
 * 1) That is what we are looking for. I understand features are free, but polish
and sparkles are extra. We want the polish and sparkles. Thank you.
 * 2) I think I need to explain this more. We are creating a guide for a certain
area and I need to display multiple locations for a business. Maybe I could do
this by loading the map and using a tag? We will have businesses listed and the
cat will be something like computer-shop, but if one of them is called “AA Computer
Shop”, we need to be able to have one page for that computer shop where we display
a map containing all their links.
I am sure we could figure out a way to do
this if you wanted to work with us. Doing this for one post will be a nightmare.
However, I think we could create 3 posts, one for each location with the first
post being the main listing for that business. Then we simply redirect the other
two posts to the first post and bang! 3 listings, 1 post, all clicks are redirected
   to the first post.
 * 3) The idea here is that if a customer viewed the main map, it would display
the icons for categories so they could clearly see what category they were from.
If they then viewed the category it would instead show company logos so they
   can easily be identified.
 * 4) From what I saw, your maps added a pin for the customers location. The issue
here is that for PCs that location is usually 20-50 miles out, for cell phones
it is pretty accurate. If the customer is using a PC, then their location is
out by a lot and the map of the area we cover is much smaller and doenst make
   much sense.
 * 5) Nice, we can zoom to fit the pins on the map. Is that setting in the free
   version.

 * Hello Jan, I was not aware that was not allowed. Does it state that in the guidelines?
If so, I can ensure we do not do that in future. However, our review included
many items I couldnt include in the forum review and I felt it was helpful to
the user as it includes all other google map plugins.
As a developer I can include
links to premium features, but as a reviewer I can not include links to the full
review of all other plugins, especially when this one does not work?

 * Agreed, they could have at least mentioned it in the forums. Why are we hearing
this from a fellow user? Thanks for that Dalton by the way, but it really should
have been done by the author.
Also, I think WordPress should have a feature
that allows an author to update the plugin and mark it as a fix for vulnerabilities.
It then notifies the wordpress installation which triggers an email to the webmaster
for that site, or notifies all admins. Even the mod admits it sucks, so why has
   nothing been done about it?
 * “we haven’t acted the ideal way when we released the first security patch in
2.6.7.” “This is an extremely important 0-day security issue that we haven’t
   handled correctly.”
Seriously? You’re saying you didnt handle it correctly,
put 1.7 million websites at risk but you will do it better next time. Why didn’t
you do it right this time?
 * Sorry, but for me, its a case of deactivate, delete.
    You have a lovely plugin,
but with security issues like this, they need to be addressed properly and they
need to be addressed immediately, you can not wait around, sit on your hands
and let a fellow user notify the community. And yes, for the record, we have
made many plugins, some of which had vulnerabilities found in them. We pulled
out all stops, notified all customers the best we could and got it fixed. So
I know it is not easy and is a complete nightmare.
 * georgia.d.davenport, all you can do is replace all the files with fresh files
and try to check the database. You really need to ensure that you regularly backup
in future. We backup the database via email as all files can be obtained again,
but the database can not, except from a backup. Maybe try asking the guys at
   sucuri.net for help.
