Got the access to the admin panel by deactivating the plugins in the database. Went to settings > Permalinks and clicked save. It generated a new .htaccess file automatically.
Now the website is serviced from http://example.com and the wordpress from http://example.com/sub_dir.

I have checked the database. The site URL is http://www.example.com/sub_dir and home is http://www.example.com which is the new url.
