In reply to: [Material Design for WordPress] help adding ‘cart’ to headerHello @materialmeme,
This is not directly possible without creating child theme.
You can check out documentation on how to create a child theme here: https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/
You could override menu-header.php in your child theme: https://github.com/material-components/material-design-for-wordpress/blob/d85870759ec078b426e68f5ea15dd30b41b44959/theme/template-parts/menu-header.php#L61-L64
Let us know how that works out.
Cheers!

In reply to: [Material Design for WordPress] Can’t Remove Search from Hamburger MenuHello @materialmeme,
CSS change should not cause blocking in redirects. Can you check if there is any error in console or debug further by deactivating plugins one by one?
Thanks,

In reply to: [Material Design for WordPress] Can’t Remove Search from Hamburger MenuHello @materialmeme,
Thank you for reaching out,
1. Currently, there isn’t any direct way to hide search. You can use following CSS:
.mdc-drawer .search-form { display:none; }
.2. Currently, we don’t support this directly, You can take a look at a related issue on GitHub https://github.com/material-components/material-design-for-wordpress/issues/222.
I’ve created GitHub discussion as well, Can you help with comment how do you see it being used? https://github.com/material-components/material-design-for-wordpress/discussions/399.
3. Can you try using hide section option on the page? https://s.utkarshpatel.com/35UWtc2.png
Let me know if this resolves your issue.
Thanks,

In reply to: [Material Design for WordPress] Page title is h2?Hello @bangduty,
According to material guideline, we recommend h1 (style from class
mdc-typography--headline1
) is reserved for short text.Reference: https://material.io/develop/web/guides/typography
Currently, we are setting post title with
mdc-typography--headline2
.If you’d like to increase match heading with
mdc-typography--headline1
then you can try adding the following in Customize ⇾ Additional CSS or your child theme / plugin:.entry-title.mdc-typography.mdc-typography--headline2 { font-style: normal; font-style: var(--mdc-typography-headline1-font-style, normal); -moz-osx-font-smoothing: grayscale; -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-family: var(--mdc-typography-headline1-font-family,var(--mdc-typography-font-family, Roboto,)); font-size: 6rem; font-size: var(--mdc-typography-headline1-font-size, 6rem); line-height: 6rem; line-height: var(--mdc-typography-headline1-line-height, 6rem); font-weight: 300; font-weight: var(--mdc-typography-headline1-font-weight, 300); letter-spacing: -0.015625em; letter-spacing: var(--mdc-typography-headline1-letter-spacing, -0.015625em); text-decoration: inherit; -webkit-text-decoration: inherit; -webkit-text-decoration: var(--mdc-typography-headline1-text-decoration, inherit); }
Hello @seanbw,
Can you try pasting the key at the end of the URL below and see if you’re getting a valid JSON response when opening that url with key in browser?
https://www.googleapis.com/webfonts/v1/webfonts?key=
Here is documentation on API: https://developers.google.com/fonts/docs/developer_api#APIKey
Let us know the output.
Thanks!
Hello @nathandonnelly,
Thank you for your feedback!
We are checking this internally, meanwhile you can try this patch to add icon: https://gist.github.com/PatelUtkarsh/5fe03e0f53666824c911b9c5d9222a8f
1. Overrides default menu walker with custom walker, which injects markup required by material tabs with icon. See https://material.io/components/tabs/web#basic-usage (See functions.php and custom_walker.php)
2. Insert menu text which expects content inside class
mdc-tab__content
=><span class="mdc-tab__icon material-icons" aria-hidden="true">home</span><span class="mdc-tab__text-label">Home</span>
3. Add CSS for icon to appear in correct color.
Let us know if you face any issues.
Cheers!

In reply to: [Material Design for WordPress] Floating labels not workingHello @anoktear,
Material plugin doesn’t initiate all the custom labels and only handles the contact form.
You can add your custom selector in custom JS and initiate, that should work.
Theme handles initializing that, that’s why it works when you inject JS from theme – https://github.com/material-components/material-design-for-wordpress/blob/501a7d4dc0a412d46b81602d6648e39096a977ca/theme/assets/src/front-end/components/textfield.js#L20-L29.
We will check internally and see if we would handle initializing it from plugin if theme isn’t active.
Cheers!
Utkarsh PatelHello @zzzz8888,
That would be a good feature to add, Currently we do not support it. We are looking into it internally (no promises).
If you look at the component here: https://material.io/components/tabs/web#basic-usage which shows an example of how can you add icons to the tabs.
<span class="mdc-tab__content">
<span class="mdc-tab__icon material-icons" aria-hidden="true">favorite</span>
<span class="mdc-tab__text-label">Register</span>
</span>
And with some CSS override to make icon color same as menu item:
.site__navigation .tab-bar .mdc-tab .mdc-tab__text-label, .site__navigation .tab-bar .mdc-tab .mdc-tab__icon { color: #fff; color: var(--mdc-theme-on-header,var(--mdc-theme-on-primary,#fff)); }
To answer the other question: We are working on adding a standalone icon to the paragraph and we already added an icon as a block-level element in the latest release. See https://github.com/material-components/material-design-for-wordpress/issues/79
Does that answer your questions?
Cheers!
Hello @zzzz8888,
The current best option is to add it to the tab menu or hamburger menu.
You may also make a child theme and override it the way you’d like. https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/
Cheers!

In reply to: [Material Design Google] Can I customize website width?Hello @mahi7783,
Do you have a public site where we can test this?
Material design recommends using top critical pages on the tab menu and keeping items limited.
You can put additional items on the hamburger menu.

In reply to: [Material Design Google] Can I customize website width?Hey @mahi7783,
We are glad you like it.
We don’t recommend increasing content width but if you’d really need to then you can try the following steps:
Go to Customizer -> Additional CSS -> Copy following -> Paste in textarea -> Update as you’d like -> Publish.
:root{ --mdc-theme-max-content-width: 1280px; }
Recommended breakpoints from material guidelines are: https://material.io/archive/guidelines/layout/responsive-ui.html
Cheers!
Hello @rlamoni,
Thank you for reaching out.
I assume (but may be wrong) that the CSS/javascript included in this wordpress plugin only covers the material components that are needed for the theme and the “Material Blocks”.
That is a correct assumption.
You may already know this but if not, material.io is a good reference to add any new component – https://material.io/develop/web/components/input-controls/select-menus
To add any new components you will need to:
- Output material friendly HTML markup which contains mdc classes via theme or custom block.
- Load material CSS for component from npm package. Example: https://github.com/material-components/material-design-for-wordpress/blob/113fb9f444de42b427cc423d6b2d330fa87a949b/plugin/assets/css/src/material-components.css#L21-L34
- Initiate frontend JavaScript if component requires it. Example: https://github.com/material-components/material-design-for-wordpress/blob/113fb9f444de42b427cc423d6b2d330fa87a949b/plugin/assets/src/common/mdc-components-init.js#L27-L33
That should do it.
You can also create new feature request on GitHub. We will check internally and triage.
Let us know if this helps.
Cheers!
