 * Cheers for clearing this up, makes perfect sense.
 * In my scenario, its only the thumbnails on the homepage that a random sizes –
   there is only one image per project – which isn’t a lot of work
 * For actual images in the slider, it’s fine that they are all the same height.
 * Thanks again for your response.

 * To help you understand, I have found a decent workaround.
 * If I set the wordpress media image size to 998X998 px then this fixes the problem.
   The image is slightly resized & the compression is applied. For some reason,
   the compression isn’t being applied when there is no need to resize the image
   physically.
 * Regards,
    Tycus

 * Thank your for the response, I’ll try to explain. I am using the JPEG quality
   setting already. I’ve tested this a few times to make sure I’m correct.
 * An example:
 * WordPress media size settings: 1000X1000 px
    Upload: the_image.jpg (which is
   the size 2000X2000px)
 * Plugin correctly creates: [the_image-1000X1000@2x.jpg](https://wordpress.org/support/users/tycus/replies/the_image-1000X1000@2x.jpg?output_format=md)**
   BUT** the compression is not applied (no matter what quality I set it to)
 * the_image.jpg & [the_image-1000X1000@2x.jpg](https://wordpress.org/support/users/tycus/replies/the_image-1000X1000@2x.jpg?output_format=md)
   are exactly the same size, the jpeg compression that I set has not been applied
   to the Retina image. It seems that the Retina version is actually exactly the
   same image as the original. It hasn’t been resized (which is as it should be,
   but it hasn’t been compressed as per the setting either)
 * Hope this makes sense. Here is a screenshot to illustrate:
