 * I have also tried renaming the advanced-cache.php. Same error.

 * Thanks Fexin. I just renamed the plugins folder tried but was still unable to
   upgrade to 3.8.1 from 3.7.1.
 * I did notice that now with the plugins folder renamed, I get an actual error
at wp-admin page instead of a blank screen…
 * It reads “W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place.
Please re-install plugin or remove /public_html/xxxxxxcarservice/wp-content/advanced-
   cache.php.”
 * Is there any wordpress core files I can edit to work around this? Anything you’d
recommend at this point? I think this may be a pretty difficult fix.
