  • Also, I think it’s clear that users want more design and layout control, and that’s why Page Builders like Elementor are so popular. Gutenberg is the answer to that.

I am laughing my butt off at that one. No, it’s not. By far.

Also, it’s easier to use for new users. I have a lot of clients that don’t know how to use the classic editor.

If they don’t know how to use a Classic Editor they haven’t really edited anything in their life and good luck with Gutenberg. Show them any other page builder and ask them which is easier to use. Classic Editor plus page builder or solely Gutenberg.

This from the first comment on that post.

Automattic needs a revitalization plan. So even though they know nothing about how WP is used in the wild, they took over the Core development process and declared the editor the problem, and Gutenberg the answer.

And then it freaking hit me. Exactly! They revitalized their paid platform in order to “compete” while disregarding the WP users outside their paid platform. Ok, now this makes perfect sense. Their platform users are basic users anyway who can’t go the length of installing this on a host and running this on their own, so to compete and make “innovations” they introduced this FOR THE PAID PLATFORM and the rest of WP community has to take the pill, too. Who cares about the rest of the WP users who promote the use of the WP anyway, right? It’s about the users of the PAID platform.

    Got it.

THAT doesn’t make it useful to the rest of the community outside the paid platform, because that community went much further than WP will ever go. Automattic just has to make sure Classic Editor continues to work and that’s it.

They can do whatever they want to blocks for their paid users. No problem, just leave us do our thing in the wild.

It’s really ironic when devs act like bureaucrats.

Blocks can stay if they introduce a “classic” block that will mimic Classic Editor capabilities where we can continue with everything as normal.

If they continue to support Classic Editor, so be it. As long as the core can work with that, it’s fine with me.

Good luck with setting sites the way you want without using some additional plugins (which is detrimental to what these blocks were supposed to solve).

People will get used to another useless thing and work with it, that’s true, however, there are better solutions to WP you could introduce that are really so basic, it’s funny.

But I guess some blogger or a bunch of had this beautiful idea of blocks for their personal blogs and felt this would be wonderful to have. And they built this simplistic block functionality that works great for other simplistic blogs, too. But in reality, it’s a step back.

But why bother, when there’s no direct financial incentive, right?

I wish WP would be paid. I’d pay for it and then vote with my money.

But that’s what you get with free stuff. You get what you pay for. I pay for a lot of plugins because their developers listen to what their users want. I can hardly rely on free stuff.

So, yes, this perfectly reflects the free nature of the platform.

Exactly. This resembles Windows 8.0 perfectly.

But given that WP is free and thus there isn’t any financial incentive to do what MS has done in post 8.0 versions, WP will just stick to their guns. Period.

    Good luck!

Wait… I’ve read a response by you in one of the posts that the catch of blocks editor is to not need any additional visual editor plugins. Like this IS the advantage of Gutenberg. And then to actually get good use of the blocks we need to install plugins. Isn’t that ironic?

He said HE uses it because apparently, HE knows hows HTML. We import posts into the WP through HTML tab too, because they are pre-edited in our in-house platform. So we just copypaste them through the HTML tab.

I am also a guy that likes to try new things and won’t discredit them just being new. Change is a part of life. I know what they wanted to do with the blocks, but frankly, they just are not up to par with other visual editors. Sorry.

If you build simple sites, simple blogs, then sure. If you want specific stuff, specific placements, good luck.

This whole thing looks like it was built by devs who use WordPress for their own personal blogs on a basic level so they can’t really see what the catch is and will hardly see what the catch is because, well, they will stick to their guns because it took so long to build it. A classic programmer’s approach to solving things – if it’s good for them it MUST be good for everyone.
