Wow, I just tried it, and it works!

    Thank you so much!

My WordPress theme, Color Mag, does not allow for using a Tag to put a post in the homepage slider. It must be a Category.

“Archive” acts as the parent category for the sub-categories because that is the only way to see all article from all subcategories in chronological order, which is something my readers asked for.

The linked article seems to be about creating an image slideshow and organizing media into categories, which does not help me.

All I was hoping for was a simple way to include a Sub-Category while excluding a Category. I know this can be done because I was able to do it with the help of the AVH widget until the latest WordPress update. Apparently there is no similar, up-to-date widget that can act as a replacement.

    Thanks for trying.

    That is indeed the problem.

As noted above, the article is assigned to the parent category because that it what makes it show up in the slider for featured articles on the home page.

Up until the latest WordPress update, I was able to use the AVH Extended Categories plugin to prevent parent category articles from showing up in the Same Category Posts widget (the AVH plugin added a check-box to each article, which I could use to select which sub-category of articles would display). I was hoping there was an alternative method.

I think what I am looking for is more like an option to exclude a category while retaining a subcategory.

My website is organized like this:

    CAGEGORY: ARCHIVE

    SUB-CATEGORIES: CINEMA – THEATRE – ATTRACTIONS – NIGHT/LIFE/STYLE

Currently, if I check the box to place an article in CINEMA sub-category, it shows only CINEMA articles. If I check the boxes to place an article in the CINEMA sub-category and the ARCHIVE category, the Same Category widget displays everything in ARCHIVE: CINEMA, THEATRE, ATTRACTIONS, and NIGHT/LIFE/STYLE. If I go into the Same Category Posts widget options to exclude ARCHIVE, then everything disappears, including CINEMA. I want to avoid displaying other articles in ARCHIVE but leave articles in CINEMA.

I am not using a page builder or a visual composer. I am using Classic Editor, if that makes any difference.

I am also using the WordPress Review plugin, which Yoast does not pick up, but I already knew that.

The problem is not that Yoast is missing examples of the focus key phrase; it’s that Yoast is finding examples that do not exist: 47 on page that actually contains only five instances.

It’s also possible that Yoast is failing to pick up image alt attributes from photos that are part of a WordPress gallery of images. Currently, Yoast says only 4 out of 16 images contain the focus key phrase. There is one feature image and three images embedded in the text, with a gallery of 12 more images at the bottom, so that math works out for that assumption.

That still doesn’t explain the focus key phrase being found “47” times.

Thanks, but I’m not sure it’s worth the effort. I’ve found that the trouble can be solved by respositioning the ad just above the top navigation menu instead of just below it.

Sorry to waste anyone’s time. It looks like Ad Inserter was causing the problem. I should have disabled it before posting my question. Thanks for the help.

Actually, it turns out that Bravenet had intended to switch all their customers to 5.3 a while back, but in fact my website did not get switched until right before the problem started, so that seems to be a factor.

I now notice that my YET ANOTHER RELATED POSTS plug-in produces this error message on the website:

Warning: strip_tags() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given in /misc/14/272/478/925/3/user/web/cinefantastiqueonline.com/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 631

Thank you! Event Calendar was the problem; since de-activating it, my websites are back online.

Now I just have to figure out how to make the plug-in work again; I find it very useful

Bravenet says that in anticipation of dropping PHP 5.2 this month, they recently switched the default to 5.3. Could that have caused the plug-in problem?

I have forwarded the question to Bravenet. We’ll see what they say…

I tried the solutions offered here but still could not get the plug in to work correctly.

Before changing the rewrite rule from true to false, I was getting the “Not Found, Error 404” message when clicking on one of the taxonomy links.

After changing the rule, I would get an archive page (“You are browsing the archives of…”), but there would be no posts, only the message: “Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.”

Of course, at least one post must match the criteria – the one from which I clicked the link to reach the archive.

    Any ideas?

I’m not so sure WP Super Cache was the problem anymore. I have reactivated the plug-in, but it is “HALF ON Super Cache Disabled, only legacy WP-Cache caching.”

I have also re-activated Event Calendar and Events Calendar, which I had thought might be causing the problem. (Yes, I use both: Events calendar to show a list of upcoming events in the sidebar, Event Calendar to put trailers of upcoming movies in order of release on the home page.)

Everything seems working at the moment, so this is not a priority. Just wish I knew what happened.

The default WordPress permalinks are “ugly.” Select another option like “day and name” or “month and name.” These are considered “fancy” or “pretty.”

Okay, I went back and tried again. Admin was merely slow, not unusable. Deleted some more stuff from the website and got the website running. It’s a pale shadow of what it was, but at least it’s visible to visitors.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in. I guess the problem is “resolved,” but the mystery remains: how could the website handle over 5000 visitors one day a couple weeks ago without incident and then suddenly be so screwed up that it only could handle a dozen today?

Deleted unused themes and renamed the plugins but still can’t access the website.

I have a feeling the problem lies elsewhere. The website had been running problem-free for months with these plugs in, background images and ad banners. Then suddenly, last night, just before midnight, it suddenly went bad.
