 * Thanks, the last bit about requiring domain names instead of IP addresses was
   the critical bit. I set up the hosts file on my local client to map a domain 
   name to that IP address. Then I changed the site url and blog url to use that
   domain name. Now I can create a subdomain multisite installation.
 * I think the docs should mention that you can’t use IP addresses, no? I certainly
   came across no mention of that in the multisite instructions.
 * I’m a wp newbie but I can certainly change [http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network](http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network)
   to reflect this fact…
