It looks like I’m going to have to resort to this same ugly redirect technique until I get a better answer. Here’s another user who had the exact same issue:

I have not. I can examine it on my local dev machine (the same code doesn’t work there), but I’m not sure about the Media Temple servers. (We’re using the shared hosting setup; so I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to change anything so easily).
Any thoughts into what might be causing it inside of the httpd.conf ?
