He was using a free version of BitDefender, which stopped being supported in 2016. But once I activated the parent theme, and rechecked the child theme in the file structure, the child theme showed up (magically) in the dashboard. Multiple authors do not appear, and the Search box for authors in the the WP Dashboard does not work at all.
