I used the code that google provides for the badge in a simple text widget in my sidebar. No need for a plugin.
However mine also wasn’t showing up in Chrome, but it did in IE.
The problem was in my Chrome settings, which block third party cookies and site data (Settings->Advanced Settings->Content Settings). For the badge to show up I needed to add an exception: apis.google.com
