 * In fact that’s what I did today just to see what might be the result. It worked
fine. I copied the text into a new page and then inserted the same images into
the text and all went well so I trashed the defective page. Yeah, it’s a solution
but it simply reinforces my anxiety about the stability of wordpress on one’s
own server. Thanks for your continuing concern.

 * Thank you for your suggestions. As noted, I had already disabled **all** plugins
and I confirmed this by resetting the plugins folder with PhpMyAdmin as you suggested.
It was reset. I had negelected to mention it but I am using Twenty Ten.
 * Interestingly, I had been unable to edit this page at all when I was developing
it without first deactivating plugins. After that and after page development
things worked fine for awhile. ONly when I sought to Edit the page a couple of
days ago to remove the password requirement did I run into this trouble.

 * Thanks for the suggestion. I moved all of the 3.1 files to my root directory;
I used phpMyAdmin to change the entries for siteurl and home in wp-options; and
checked that my 1&1 Domain Destination is the root directory. So, [http://www.bergiesplace.com](http://www.bergiesplace.com)
is working again after months of part time struggling and frustrations with upgrades
to 2.8 and 3 and 3.05 and now 3.1, with a update of MySql to 5 along the way
and a new theme along the way. Doing WordPress on other servers is not for sissies.
Now maybe I can get some content added.

 * OK. Thanks. I just have to re-upload the images for this blog.

 * My problem is with the images that are to be contained within the blog, not with
the blogroll kind of links which, yes, do work. On my homepage [http://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite](http://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite)
the Vermont Panorama image is missing. Further, when I try to edit the blog and
add other pictures from my Media Library, all images previously stored there
have entries on the Media Library page but each enty carries the broken link
symbol instead of the image. Interesting that it can determine the list of images
but not retrieve the images, themselves.

 * Yep, it’s a theme issue. Dash board tells me that the theme I was using before
updating to 3.01 (Garland) is “broken” and the installation reverted to Twenty
Ten. I certainly regret upgrading to 3.01.

 * mrbungle, I am using IE8. For what it’s worth I suggest you follow up on kenkholland’s
suggestion. Check the content of Uploads in the wp-config folder. That solved
   my problem.

 * OK, henkholland, I’m back in business, and even with my preferred theme rather
than the default. The upload folder under the wp-config folder in 2.6.8 had **
no entries**. Apparently, I should have transferred that folder from the 2.7.1
folder into its right place in the 2.8.6 folder.
 * The need for this hadn’t occurred to me as I assumed that my uploads were all
still in MySQL and would be accessed as needed by the 2.8.6 system. I obviously
need to get a better reference on and understanding of the structure of wordpress.
 * The WordPress instructions on upgrading do, in fairness, tell one to “Delete
any old WP files, saving ones you’ve modified.” and I, obviously, didn’t know
the need to save the old wp-config folder.
 * Well, another learning experience (at age 77, do I still need these?). On a personal
note, I started at RCA in 1959 and in the lab next door, they were still doing
service bureau work on the RCA **vacumn tube **machine, BIZMAC. Since then, it’s
been one damn thing after another.
 * I am indebted for your suggestions and guidance, and I thank you. Be Well!

 * Thanks for hanging in. The picture links appear to be identical.
 * What was interesting is that when I converted to the default theme on 2.8.6,
the post page now appears and one can also call up the pages. However, the picture
links are broken. I checked wp-config for 2.8.6 (with default theme)and the database
entries are all correct. I further replaced wp-config in the 2.8.6 folder with
the version from the 2.7.1 folder which, as you’ll recall, did work ok. It still
show broken links in 2.8.6. I’ve left the 2.8.6 version in place at [http://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite](http://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite).
 * Another wierd thing: with 2.8.5, the default theme, and its original wp-config,
if I go to its dashboard and try to edit the post, I see the post briefly and
it is then replaced with about three lines of spaces and red periods. With the
version of wp-config from 2.7.1, I can access the post for editing.

 * Interestingly, nothing happened for me when I clicked for Automatic Upgrade so
I clicked Manual. I downloaded the .zip file and opened it into a directory on
my desktop. Then I ftp’d it to bergiesplace.com/Newsite. Because of my subsequent
difficulties I would up uploading it two to three times so I discount an ftp-
   induced problem.

 * Thanks for your time. I checked the wp-admin database prefix in both versions,
2.7.1 (which works) and 2.8.6 (which doesn’t.) They are the same in each case
as are the WordPress and Blog Addresses under Settings/General. Yes, there is
only one post and two pages as I haven’t yet converted from my bergiesplace.wordpress.
   com blog.

 * P.S. I negelected to mention that if I click on Visit Site on the Dashboard,
   I get a white screen.
