Multiple readers have confirmed this. Started about a month ago. Sitegournd says it’s not them. I do have a thesis update for two of the three sites, need to do it manually. * It was working, then it got iffy again. I assume some update caused a conflict. * I do understand how other plugins or theme can break it. What I do not understand is why it worked despite this for years with a paste from word button, but now it keep getting broken. I updated both TinyMCE and WP core, so I do not know which fixed it, or it it was both. Thanks to whomever took care of the issue. * That said, buttons for options is always good!
