 * The culprit was the o42-clean-umlauts plugin bundled with the German version
   of WordPress.

 * Even after converting the database to UTF8 (following the instruction found on
   [http://jonkenpon.com/2007/02/20/making-your-wordpress-database-portable-because-it-probably-isnt-right-now/](http://jonkenpon.com/2007/02/20/making-your-wordpress-database-portable-because-it-probably-isnt-right-now/))
and upgrading to 2.2 I am still unable to resolve my problem.
 * I’ve posted a small screenshot that illustrates the problem on ImageShack: [http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wordpressjv3.png](http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wordpressjv3.png)
 * For any ideas or help I’d be really thankful!

 * Sorry, there is no link as I’ve choosen not to publish the article in question(
   it’s malformed after all).
 * I use the built in WordPress (non-rich) editor on Windows XP. Results are the
same when posting via MSIE or Firefox. The XML / RSS export function shows the
correct characters, as well as the editor. Only the content that is shown on
the website itself is (partially) escaped.
 * The charset of the the WordPress tables is latin1 (as choosen by the installer)–
maybe this is the result of a buggy conversion of the latin1 data (back) to UTF8?
