 * I am happy to report that Hostcolor is fixing everything for me. I couldn’t do
normal update/install because of a server issue. In all fairness, I’ve been with
them for several years so it’s not surprising that the server I’m on is probably
the same version I’ve had since I started with their service which doesn’t have
the right PHP and extension support. As soon as I started a support ticket with
them, they offered to migrate my server to an upgraded one and upgrade wp for
me for free with no delay in my normal service (which I took them up on as I’ve
spent too many hours fooling with it at this point lol).
 * Thanks again for the help!

 * Thanks esmi. I just ran a search through my ftp for the term “wp” and I didn’t
find anything for wordpress except in the database I created for this install
and the install I recently attempted. I’m certain there is only one install.
 * When I did the fresh install and tried to access wpadmin through my browser,
it didn’t work. I failed to save the error message and don’t recall it, but the
page wouldn’t load at all until I went into cpanel and recreated the database(
with the same name) at which point, I was back to my 2.3.1 load.
 * I followed very carefully the instructions for manual update after that. There
was no easy/automatic update button on the interface – just the link to the wp
update instructions. After I completed this operation, I still had the 2.3.1
   page.
 * At this point I think perhaps my best course of action is to contact the host.
   Opinions?
 * Thank you for the idea. I was hopeful you were right about a double install.
That would have been easy to fix lol

 * I tried to do that after the first failed update. I deleted all the wp stuff
and installed the 3.2.1. At that point, I had to go back into cpanel and create
my blog again. When I did that, it still popped up as 2.3.1. I don’t understand
why it did this because I deleted every single file in that folder and replaced
it with the new files. The time stamp of last modification didn’t change when
I created the new blog, but it still says 2.3.1. Is there anywhere else wp files
could be hiding? Does that come from my host? If I didn’t create the blog through
cpanel, I couldn’t log into wpadmin so I’m a little lost.
 * I am totally comfortable with all this – I just can’t tell if my host has caused
the problem or if I’m missing some trick because I’m new to the software.

 * I followed the upgrade instructions that I found on the wp site. I thought it
might need to go through multiple steps, but was unable to find any documentation
   of that process.
Would you recommend contacting the host? That’s what I was
considering as my next step. Thanks so much for the feedback.
