Hi Murali,
Thank you for looking into it. It does seem Firebase has made it not as straightforward as it probably should be. We are glad to hear that you may have a solution to it. However, it may be a bit too complex for us to try out at this point in time with our level of expertise. If you know someone else that’s a bit more comfortable with trying out the potential solution, then that’s probably ideal. We wouldn’t want you to spend time on something we won’t be able to help you test at this current time. We can work around it by sending on-demand push notifications from the PNFPB plugin directly. This will be fine for us for the time being. 🙂
When we delete selected tokens (done manually at the moment), we can take note of the device tokens prior to deleting them from the PNFPB token list. If we are able to implement a solution like the one you mentioned, in the future, would the noted device tokens be enough to send to Firebase to request they be deleted? Should there be something else we should note?
Thanks.
Thanks, Murali. We appreciate your thorough reply and sharing that information. We’ll look forward to hearing about your progress. 🙂
Thanks, Murali. We’ve tested it again too, and the apostrophes are coming through fine in push notifications; sorry if we were mistaken about this earlier. Thanks for looking at the fix for one time on demand push notifications. 🙂
Thanks, Murali. Thank you for your dedication and for looking into it.
Thanks, Murali; that sounds great. 🙂
Hi Murali,
Thanks for such a comprehensive update! So far, everything seems to be working really well. The only minor thing we’ve noticed is that when a Device Token search is done, the number of items (i.e. “_ items” label on the top and bottom right of the table) does not reflect the search results. E.g. if you have 20 tokens total and search for a specific user ID, the total number of items will still display “20 items” regardless of how many results are returned.
Thanks again. 🙂
That sounds amazing, Murali! Thank you, very much. We’ll look forward to it.

In reply to: [Push Notification for Post and BuddyPress] Management of stale tokensHi Murali,
Thanks for looking into it and providing that clarification. We’ll consider moving away from the CrossGeeks plugin, if we can, as that’s probably causing our issue with not being able to use the originally issued token.
Thank you for letting us know about the bad token management, and for the code you’ve provided. We really appreciate you taking the time to specify the line numbers, too.
We have thought about the possibility of old/stale tokens being removed on timestamp, based on information we’ve read on FCM token management, but now believe that wouldn’t be appropriate/needed because it would limit users receiving notifications about new BuddyPress activity (e.g. private messages).
Thanks again for all your help.

In reply to: [Push Notification for Post and BuddyPress] Token expiry for deleted usersThanks for sending out the plugin update.
We’ve done some testing, and have noticed that for deleted users tokens to actually be removed, the “Schedule automatic delete tokens without userid (userid=0)” option has to be off. That is, if both “Schedule automatic delete tokens with userid no longer exist” and “Schedule automatic delete tokens without userid (userid=0)” options are on, the tokens for deleted users do not get removed. Is this how it’s supposed to work?
We also noticed that when the cron job schedule is changed, “Save changes” sometimes needs to be clicked twice, before it appears to be updated.
We’re using the WP Crontrol plugin to check the schedule.
Thanks.
