 * Thanks, Steven, I’ll have a look into that. If I could ask, would you recommend
   one database per WP instance rather than a shared Db with individual tables?

 * Ok, so WP_USE_MULTIPLE_DB is not what I’m looking for.. Thanks, Andrea_r, for
   clearing that much up anyway. I still need to look at options for restoring a
   single blog out of dozens, potentially hundreds (educational institution rolling
   out to several thousand staff). I’d really appreciate any advice from experienced
   WP admins on the best way to go about this. Thanks

 * A fresh tarball seems to have solved my problems. Should have tried that sooner.

 * Esmi, thanks for the reply. I had deactivated all plugins but not themes so have
   just tried again with only the default theme active but getting same result.
