 * Esmi, thank you. You have quoted one part of my message: “and also to the authors
of every comment in the thread.” Is that one clause the functionality that is
not a part of WordPress? If that’s what you mean, I am confused, because the
WordPress documentation says that the “me” in “E-mail me every time someone posts
a comment” means both admins and all authors in the specific discussion.
 * If what you mean is that splitting those–so that only the admin and not the authors
get the e-mails–then I understand, and that is what needs to be fixed. Apparently,
though, it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do based on the documentation,
but I am trying to find a way to change that default setting of “me means admins
   plus authors.”

 * OK, the problem is that I don’t speak programming language and, in looking for
words I recognize I see the following:
 * I am using a hosting service, not my own box.
My admin address is a valid address(
although granted lots of people hate AOL, but it’s still a valid address).
 * All I can tell as a novice is that I am doing nothing wrong, changing nothing
in the system, and it’s not doing what it is supposed to do. This is as frustrating
to someone who does speak the language, I’m sure, as it is to me, not able to
   do all that coding.

 * Thank you, Esmi, but that is not the problem. The new user who self-registers
chooses his or her own password right there.
 * The problem is that the Admin (me) is not receiving e-mail to tell me that someone
   new has just registered.
