I did not find a reset setting. However, I clicked the Quick Configuration option to Default WordPress Settings. I have not gotten any php errors since then. Curiously, I reset my options to Disable Autoupdates for themes and plugins. I set Translations Updates to Manual. After that, I stopped getting the message that a new update is available from at least one of my plugins, Formidable Forms Pro. After verifying that Formidable had not changed their updating process, I changed the Translations setting in Easy Updates to Enable Automatic Updates, and this fixed plugin update problem. I am not sure what is going on here. I have the language set to English, so I thought the Translations would be irrelevant. Certainly, I did not expect the Translations option to prevent updates to another plugin. * Nevertheless, I am working again. Thanks. I did have show toolbar checked. It has been working for several years, but just stopped working recently. I managed to get it back by unchecking an option in Firefox to block popups. * It is strange that I have three WordPress sites, all running on the Striking Advanced Theme, and all with the same plugins with one exception. The Striking Theme provides extensive functionality for my sites, so I really cannot even try other ones. The other two sites did not have a problem even with the Firefox option for popups engaged. The only difference is that I use Formidable Forms on the lventure.org site. I also get Revolution Slider with the Striking Theme on all three sites, but I only have it activated on lventure.org. It must have been some conflict with Formidable or Revolution Slider. There was one instance earlier where Formidable Forms caused an issue that the developer fixed right away. You mention the CSS of the themes. Both Striking and Formidable probably make extensive use of CSS. I am not advanced enough to really understand that. I am guessing that the popup option for Firefox is probably a new feature, and the problem started when I updated Firefox. * Thanks again for the assistance. Yes, I have Formidable installed. I went to the site, and its seems OK. I manually started a malware scan, and it ran fine. I am starting to understand this plugin. It will be useful when they upgrade the Compare Files Online feature to include plugins and themes beyond the iThemes ones. Otherwise, I have to review things. I notice that BackupBuddy, for example, apparently regularly changes a file .htaccess (not the main one). When I update my theme or a plugin, I expect to see files in that particular directory change. * On a separate note, I see that I am getting 404 errors detected where someone is scanning my sites, apparently looking to see if I have certain vulnerable plugins they can exploit. That is something I never saw with WordFence. I guess it makes sense that 14 days worth of logs should not be too bad. * By the way, I just looked and I have a log entry for changed files that has a very long list list of changes. I assume that is because I updated my theme and a plug in yesterday. A number of the changes were in directories wp-admin/network and wp-admin/js/ that seem to be various parameters of WordPress itself. These may have changed as part of the theme update, I suppose. How do you know when changes like that are normal and when they might be malicious? When I used to use Wordfence, it would compare WordPress and plugin files with the master copies at WordPress and report differences. It often showed changes like an update to the WordPress version supported that did not mean anything. That answers my question. I am disappointed, however. Most other plugins with logs keep them in files and allow them to be viewed from within WordPress admin, including the iThemes BackupBuddy. * I have been using WordFence up to now, and it is not unusual for me to get lock outs where someone tries a variety of different login names and passwords repeatedly in a short period of time. I guess if there is another Php.ini file in the subdirectory it must override the extension into subdirectories. I did communicate with the theme author. Striking Multiflex is one of the most advanced themes. They reported that there are many things that could cause the update to be missed, mostly resource issues such as timeouts or memory limitations. They suggested it is easier just to update using ftp than to spend the time tracking down the specific culprit. The updates have actually started working again, so perhaps something was happening at the host at that point. Anyway, this had noting to do with the Update Control plugin.
